No problems with whatsapp -
google's works like a donkey stuck in the mud
Google is a casualty of the fallout between China and the U.S. America has been accusing China of spying and stealing tech and vice versa. The U.S. blocked Hauwei, China punishes Microsoft and Google. And so it goes. It strange how Google translate works fine on my desktop, but only randomly on my phone.
Google translate? Seriously?

I know it is only so, so, but it is fairly well adopted as the go to translator for most people. Case in point, it is the one used on QQ. Now that it doesn’t work some of my students with poor English have a lot of trouble chatting with me. I am guessing it cuts down on the use of dating sites for Chinese women and English speaking men.

If you can offer a better solution for translating sentences and paragraphs, then I am all ears.
My speaking and listening are ok but my reading blows goats so I am open to any viable alternatives. Also typing pinyin to someone on a roman keyboard just doesn't cut it for people who aren't familiar with communicating with foreigners.
xunliang:
But for work? Like it's part of his job to speak to Chinese people and he has to rely on Google translate? Who employed him? Why not find someone who can speak Chinese?
iWolf:
Xunlian, I agree that would have been the logical thing to do but......this is China.

The google translate app is ok...i mean it wouldnt really be feasible in an office setting to replace verbal communication, but if this guy is a buyer or something that occassionaly has to communicate...it's fine.
I use it sometimes doing errands, comes in really handy!
fanyi.baidu.com
while in Rome, do as the Romans do...

Translators that don't show pinyin are a dime a dozen and not really useful on the ground. Most that do show the pinyin are google based, ergo, not worth shit at the moment.
Chinese translators don't show pinyin, why would they when the target audience can read? Youdao translations also are ordinary at best and many single word translations are just wrong.
hunny797:
oh yeah that s a problem..sometimes baidu does show the pinyin..
i ve never been able to guess why it does show for only a few translations and not for most of them...
give me thumbs up guys..
here is the solution
camdictionary
got this app info from the internet...
features:
1. you can snap a picture of chinese txt and have it translated.
2. translate into chinese with pinyin..
also copied it to iwolf's recent question.. I hope you don't mind me taking 2 extra points..
my recommendation would be to grab a VPN for your phone. I have my home one set up on my phone using the OpenVPN app, since I never have to use both at once it's not a problem. Then you have the whole internet (plus the full google play store) with no headaches.
Only caveat is that it if you leave it on all the time it runs down your battery because it's always transmitting a tiny bit of data.
Its July 5th, Google just updated on my Samsung S4, I lost a lot more google features, so now 99.% anything google isn't working.
Bloody fkn hotmail sure as hell isn't working! It's been 3 days now! Arseholes!
xinyuren:
that's strange. I can reach hotmail.com no problem. My windows live mail program can't access my hotmail account, so I was forced to use the web interface.
royceH:
You have no problem because you're not in Xinjiang. Xinjiang is currently closed to any non-Chinese email accts. This is because of 'harmonizing'. It's the 5th anniversary of the killing of many ppl thing in Urumqi and their tactic has been to block everything 'foreign'.
There's been no email here since Wed night.
Google seems to be blocked and it is very possible that this is a result of the conflict or possibly trade war between the US and China. Either way I haven't been able to use Google or any service connected to it for weeks or months now.
Rather than joining the Chinese I have started using Bing instead though. Works just fine for most searches as well as for translating stuff. Not too great for maps of China unfortunately.

Does this mean we should start buying and using iPhones? Wonder what the draw back would be with an iPhone.
SwedKiwi1:
It seems the use of IPhones and the like is indeed being encouraged but this has the drawback of it being (even) easier for the US and China to spy on us.
