In another Forum entry this issue has come up. Despite its shortcomings, I did find google translate pretty useful for day to day stuff. Since The Issue has gone on longer than expected with no end in sight I have begun looking for viable alternatives that will display pinyin in the translation. Most that I can find that aren't using the google engine are just single word dictionaries.
Bing appears to only work on windows phones without issue. Youdao is pretty useless unless you read chinese and if I could then I wouldn't need a translator. Pleco does single words well enough but not sentences or paragraphs.
So if anyone could suggest a viable alternative that doesn't need a VPN and that is suitable for android, your advice would be much appreciated by me and I am sure others here.

give me thumbs up guys..
here is the solution
camdictionary
got this app info from the internet...
features:
1. you can snap a picture of chinese txt and have it translated.
2. translate into chinese with pinyin..
iWolf:
Good on you hunny. That sounds pretty good for some applications. I'll give it a shot and try screenshot translate also and see what happens
hunny797:
hehe Stiggs!!
It works..it works..
atleast for now.. sometimes if the app is unable to read from the img try capturing the image again..it helps..
My GOOG works well last few days in Fujian. I'm on (not really good) Hotel's Wi-fi.
I can't open Dave's ESL, but at GOOG everything works well.
My favorite translator is MDBG:

MyChina01:
I agree, I've used MDBG for years before trying Google. I also think it's more accurate, especially more so now since I understand much more Chinese and only have to use it for difficult phrases and such
Google translate has language packs you can download for offline translating. This means you can use google translate without an internet connection. Everything is in your smartphone.
hunny797:
but that is not the real problem..
the real problem is that offline translation doesn't show pinyin
iWolf:
Yeah, I have the language pack and it works pretty well but as hunny says, no pinyin offline
S translate from Samsung. But if you don't have a Samsung phone or Samsung account .....
Oh and does anyone know a good Google maps replacement?
ironman510:
I'm using baidu maps for driving around now, not too bad.
Google works great when I need it. Im using a VPN I bought on www.taobao.com
ironman510:
Hunny797, mmm I've read your replies to other members.. I'm not going to feed or give you the so called negative feedback like" hey you blah blah". No, I don't feed the trolls. Troll on hunny797, troll on man. Now the troll secret is out.. Enjoy your stay on echinacities.com.
Use Bing translator.. better result and more accurate translation that google..
iWolf:
I wanted to try Bing but google store, after a ridiculously long time, doesn't bring it up. Maybe only for windows phones, I don't know. Maybe I am a moron? (no comments about that statement please)
I tried Baidu Translator today. It does do sentences but no pinyin. Maybe I had just better study redin and ritin with a little more diligience as this issue doesn't appear to be being resolved in a hurry.
fanyi.youdao.com
but it doesn't have pinyin unfortunately...
Jibbigo and plecco are decent 'offline' translation apps you can download.
Dramatically my Google Translator works when I am using China Mobile data package and it stop working the moment I connect to the China Mobile wifi from router. I am just wondering what is the matter? Same goes with my gmail, works on Mobile data while doesn't work at wifi or DSL...
In a way,it is very funny If I try Google in HKG or even UK or USA locations all I get is "the site is not responding". But alas,if I click on Chrome USA, it does come in and works perfecty in my "foreign laptop". Also G Translate works OK !
I've been using Babel Fish on iphone for a couple of years now. You can switch it between Google and Bing. Both are working today though Bing doesn't give pinyin when it translates. I've also got a more expensive translator that is also an Engineering dictionary. That also uses google and hasn't had any problems recently. Maybe it depends on the servers they connect to.
fanyi.baidu.com
it gives you suggestion how the word which is translated has been used in the sentences so you will know in which sense the translator has translated it.
I recommend as a general solution you can set up your vpn on your phone and just always have it on when you're outside the house. I just use the same account for my laptop cause I never need to use them both at the same time.
It's nice just to have all the normal stuff work on your phone like youtube and facebook and google play etc. I'm sure there are other good translator apps but might as well just have a nice blanket solution to the china internet problem.
My vpn had instructions for setting up on a phone so i'm guessing a lot of the other ones probably do too.
Baidu translator app is in English. And just like google translator and has offline translation too.
China needs to stop this internet block/censor/no freedom/shit. What are they afraid of? Tiananmen? Tank man? Most educated Chinese already know what happened back in 1989. And some local Chinese do know CCP is shit. I am tired of this shit. I just want to use the internet on full access so that I can do my own entertainment stuffs. No, I would not use a VPN. Fuck this, I have already paid for the internet and I do not want to pay for a VPN again. Oh but we have Youku for Youtube, RenRen for facebook, Baidu for google, Weibo for tweeter, Wechat for Snapchat, and etc. Bullshit, all these are Chinese orientated, and I can not connect to the rest of the world with these Chinese copy cat stuffs.
