Q: Government wanting people to buy only domestic products - a stupid idea?

The extent to which China wants people to only buy things IN China has gotten rather stupid imo, and occasionally counter-productive.

It just seems like the more taxes they put on foreign products, the more the rich Chinese will simply leave the country to do their shopping for cheap.

I mean, do Chinese really buy things primarily because 'it's a Chinese product'? Isn't it the other way around, and people DOUBT local products?

Things changed, especially since they started seeing the west as an economical crisis hellhole.

From what I have read, the government just wants the Chinese to spend their money here, and invest in the economy.  Most people save all their money and don't spend, and by encouraging the Chinese to open their wallets, they hope the downward trend of GDP growth will be enough of a boost to get things growing at a blistering pace again.

Also, seeing Europe go bankrupt, and America struggling with their debt, I think China knows what they are doing when it comes to the economy, and managing it very well.
