Q: Is the Great China Wall overrated?

I went to visit the great china wall with some colleagues yesterday. Sight was A-MA-ZING! But there was so many people there. Which lead me to wonder : is the attraction overrated?

it definitely was awesome, but the massive flow of visitors just made the experience... not as awesome of what it could be, don't you think?

Hey Martin, if you recall correctly, you're the one who wants every Westerner out of the country, so you can be unique and have people worship you as Mr-Know-it-all.

Must be hard looking at yourself in a mirror, with the "I believe I'm native Chinese" and all...

"My wife says I'm right so Pustuluterine is obviously wrong". Did you learn that from the Law teacher you served a glass of water during a lecture?

And was your Chinese wife still laughing when you told SciFiBri "PM me with your location. I love tall western women and abhor young Chinese girls."?

Or maybe you plan on trashing her, like you advised PoutineDuFion to do with the woman he loves... And after that, you dare believe you're not the pathetic Westerner stereotype that comes in China just to abuse women?

It was awesome until I saw some other parts of the wall ...
Barely 4 foot high mount of dirt with a few rocks around it .. kind of took out the beauty of it.
Prior to coming to china I always believed the damn wall went all the way through .. sigh

Puzzled

I don't think you can say that the Great Wall of China is overrated with it's 2000 year history (can you even grasp how long 2000 years is?!). It really is one of the greatest standing historical sites of our times and the fact that it's survived so much turmoil is a real miracle.

If you just try to imagine back 2000 years ago to a time when they had no bulldozers, electricity or any kind of machinery, building a giant wall in mountainous terrain that stretches over 8000 kilometers long....it's truly amazing!

For us modern folk, the main challenge is trying to empathize and relate with the backbreaking hard labour and sheer dedication that went into this project. The Great Wall will never fail to impress if you read your history beforehand!

Totally agree with you, elsaees. the GCW is totally awesome! I may have expressed myself incorrectly. The sight, the construction is amazing, but the large flow of visitors makes it harder to really appreciate the hard work China put into it. When I have time, i'll follow sunilsah2050 recommendation. Less crowded will definitely make it way more fun!

If you don't like all the people then don't go to the tourist trap areas of the Great Wall.

Near Beijing you can go further out to the Jinshanling section of the Wall. From there you can hike to Simatai. There is not many people at all and in some sections you can see some of the original un-restored wall.

Also, like Njord mentioned, you can go to other provinces and see the Great Wall there. My personal favorite is out West in Gansu province.

It‘s way better than the band in Shanghai, at least u have some great view.
In the band, the view is just so so, but still too many people.
Everyone wants to visit places as the band and Great wall, never think about if it worths it, just want to go the place where everyone else wants to go……
