Q: Great (non-Chinese) restaurants

Simple - what's the best (non-Chinese) restaurant you've been to here?

Or, make it culture specific if you can...

For me, Indian in Taj Mahal (either branch) in Nanjing! Closely followed by an Indian restaurant in Wenzhou.

I can't really comment on Thai food, as I haven't found any really good ones here in China (even in the local - "winner of best Thai restaurant award" here in Hangzhou...).

Guangzhou rocks for some good Turkish and Middle East food.

Hangzhou and Shanghai have a great couple of US steak & burger joints, called Slim's (and with some steaks at 300+RMB, they'd better be good... and are!)

There are a couple of Greek restaurants (Taverna) in Shanghai, and while I liked going there and enjoyed the food, it wasn't as good as some places back home :(

Do you have any recommendations for anywhere?

Xiaobei in Guangzhou for Muslim food. Fantastic

I have never had a bad Indian meal here. But they are few and far between.

Still looking for a decent sandwich Sad

Hotwater:

Problem with Indian food here is that it is "watered down". A Vindaloo should be HOT. Here it is medium, even when you tell them you want HOT!

Tsim Sha Tsui is the place to go for a decent curry.

Sadly, I can never find one that does and 'authentic' English - curry and chips

Taj Mahal in Nanjing tastes like what I imagine rotten dog food would taste like.
