Q: A gym question...

What's with people working out in jeans, formal shirt, formal pants?

Last night at my gym I saw two dudes working out wearing a proper formal attire, and they weren't just trying the equipment, it was a good an hour workout.

this wasn't the first time either!

Recently my company opened a Indoor gym for the employees, without making a  changing room or even a water cooler, and HR felt no need of making a changing room (In the company we have a company given T-shirt/jacket, and you were your own bottom).. and people started the workout (in jeans and formal pants) without any complaint of the changing room (though people stopped comings after a month, but that was the will issue)...

so question is, when people here do Kung fu or go out run (though Iv'e even seen men running in formal shoes and women in mid-size heels) or tai chi, they know it should be done in loose clothes and all, but not in the Gym... Is it because it's still a foreign concept?

or am I unnecessarily generalizing it?

Chinese gyms. People smoke. People smoke while doing weights or while on the treadmill. People wear jeans, street clothes, etc. People sit about on machines and play on their phones and think that they are working out.

Karma101:

yeah man, the playing with the phone on the machine is annoying... if you need to use the machine and ask them to get up, and it ends up with a disgusted stare from them... wtf

Gyms are still kind of a foreign concept. Many Chinese don't really know how to use the equipment or proper gym manners. You should look it up, there have been lots of posts on the subject.

i usually do check before positing a question... but this one turned out empty so I asked, Anyways thanks for the answer

I think it could be that gyms are a foreign concept, coupled with the whole face thing. I've seen people wearing street clothes, dressed up in designer jeans, or shirts... just clothing that is totally not suited for exercise (including shoes that are practically dangerous to run in worn on the treadmill).

For some, they just come to the gym to show off (and take/post selfies), so dressing up in expensive clothes is part of showing off. For others, they have little concept of exercise, so don't understand that gold chains and bracelets when working the weight machines.

Shining_brow:

You have just made me think of a huge business idea!

Gold-plated (or real!!!) gym equipment! Can you imagine the clientele you'd get if you had 24carat gold dumbbells??  See how much gold you can lift on the bench! How many bars of gold can you do on a lat-pulldown!

MY IDEA!!!! I EXPECT MY CUT!!!

gatoloco12, PAL you got some serious problem... I think you may need help.

just to make it clear, I am not white (I don't know how that makes any difference).

I have no idea of what your history says and all of that... let me give you a personal example.

I am Indian, alright? ... when I was young, all our history books were filled with hate against British, during their rule.. we read, heard all kinds of racist things they did against us, included some really really gross stuff.

Butttt, till date I am yet to meet a single racist British national, neither any of my friends (most of them lived and loved UK) have ever had an experience, everything we heard was seen on the news maybe one incident in a year or so (UK does not restrict Indians from living and earning there, they never did).., now news!! we all know how it controlled and manipulated.

Another good example, I recollect speaking to my great grandmother (yeah, she lived 114 years) and my grandmother/father about British rule, they had all the good things to say (how the people were more law abiding during the rule and there was less crime), never said they witnessed a racist crime or felt inferior during the time. This posed a serious question, was all the stuff that happened was it really true or the leaders at the time made it up for the political gain? I don't know... but I believe what I see and experience.

I thought sharing this is because from your posts it feels like you have a hatred against  whites based on history, how are you any different then our hosts here? holding age old grudge... not cool Man! get over it...

Shining_brow:

Are you going to delete this, and post it in the right thread, any time soon?? :p

(not disagreeing with you, just pointing it out :D)

And, when you do - I'll delete this.
