Q: Halitosis: Is it genetic?

I'm not soliciting malicious answers so please, no negative responses.  I'm trying to solve a problem and I would like some input.  I have had relationships with 4 Chinese girls and close contacts with several others.  About half of them had bad breath.  I am trying to find the reason.  Given that they all eat the same food and spices, I suspect it may be in their genes.  At least one of them suffered from dry mouth disease.  Due to the limited gene pool, do you think this disease or another cause is the reason for the frequency of halitosis in China?

ive only had limited contact with other chinese girls due to I am married to one.
I just thought maybe due to lack of alcohole as most women I dated drink
and my wife dosn't
However I think you are on to something in thinking its a genetic thing

I'm pretty sure it's just because they don't drink enough water. Drinking plenty of water keeps your breath fresh and helps prevent cavaties. From my own personal experience, I drink less water in China and eat a lot more salt. I'm pretty sure my breath smells worse as a result.

mattaya:

Drinking alcohol will kill more bacteria than water. And how do you eat plain salt? Eww!

Alcohol may kill bacteria, but it also has sugar, which bacteria feed on. I've never smelled fresh breath from a person drinking alcohol. Your comment about salt is just silly.

I believe it is a combination of not drinking enough water and not brushing their teeth. While citygirls tend to have better oral hygene, I have noticed that this is not an ironclad rule.

Jnusb416:

Some of it may have to do with what they eat. Food has an effect on your body odor, even if it's not garlic.

The girls I have been with have impeccable hygiene (or I would not be with them) and even they were 50/50.  I find it hard to believe that Chinese people do not brush their teeth, especially given how many toothbrushes they sell everywhere, on the train, on the street, etc...

philbravery:

as you say hygiene is most unlikely due to the fact they brush 6 times a day Im going with diet however the only one that could help us settle it is going to be a medical person.. great Question by the way

You should tell your ladyfriends to brush their teeth better and to floss more often. Also make sure that they brush their tongues hard too. Most of the bad smell comes from the residue on the tongue. And if that is removed then your mouth  becomes much fresher.
And don't forget the power of a good, strong mouthwash, like Listerine.

Jnusb416:

1outhwash may freshen your breath temporarily, but it can also make your breath worse later on because it can make your mouth dry.

uh, thanks Ennius but that isn't my problem. Please read the question next time. I am researching the source of the problem, not a temporary fix.

Get them a battery operated toothbrush the one's that can work 10X better than a regular tooth brush. They may not brush because it could be that they are tired of doing it. If you want to help them out get them the toothbrush that does the work for them all they have to do is hold it in place.

Brushing before and after meals will help with this problem and also have them pop in a mint in their mouth after every strong meal that may cause their breath to invade your breathing space. Drink plenty of water and wash out their mouth with water!

You need to send them to a dentist or some serious medical professional if this doesn't work. Get some advice from them and let them help you with the underlying cause of the so called halitosis. You could be right it might be genetic but you never really know until you are 100% positively sure of what it could be.

Its a bit of a stretch to say its genetic. all known causes of it have to do with some problem like bacteria or an infection. Those kinds of things arent related to our genes.

xinyuren:

what about dry mouth disease? It's a medical condition. Could that be genetic?

Oh! To answer my own question: the disease seems to mostly happen in middle aged people. Perhaps this is not the problem I suspected.

If you suffer from Halitosis (Persistent Bad Breath):

Most cases (85–90%), bad breath originates in the mouth, sinus and throat. The intensity of bad breath differs during the day, due to eating certain foods (such as garlic, onions, meat, fish, and cheese), obesity, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Since the mouth is exposed to less oxygen and is inactive during the night, the odour is usually worse upon awakening ("morning breath"). Bad breath may be transient, often disappearing following eating, brushing one's teeth, flossing, or rinsing with specialized mouthwash.

Causes. 1, Tongue, A common location is the tongue. Tongue bacteria produce malodorous compounds and fatty acids, and account for 60 to 70% of all cases of mouth-related bad breath. Methods used against bad breath, such as mints, mouth sprays, mouthwash or gum, only temporarily mask the odours created by the bacteria on the tongue, but cannot cure bad breath because they do not remove the source of the bad breath. Cleaning the tongue - Many companies promote tongue scrapers as a bad breath cure however the bacteria on the tongue can’t be removed with a scraper or brush as they live between the taste buds. Use a tongue scrapper to reduce the food source for bacteria but don’t expect it to cure bad breath. The method of stopping bad breath from the tongue involves rebalancing the bacteria load. Once tongue bacteria are in balance bad breath will cease. For this complex procedure you’ll need to consult Oraltech Labs guidelines.

2. Mouth, There are over 600 types of bacteria found in the average mouth. Other parts of the mouth may also contribute to the overall odour, but are not as common as the back of the tongue. These locations are, in order of descending prevalence: inter-dental and sub-gingival niches, faulty dental work, food-impaction areas in between the teeth, abscesses, and unclean dentures. To fix you will need a dentist to examine your teeth and repair any faults found.

3. Gum disease, advanced periodontal disease is a common cause. Waste products from the anaerobic bacteria growing below the gum line (sub gingival) have a foul smell and have been clinically demonstrated to produce a very intense bad breath. To fix remove the tartar or hard plaque and friable tissue with a soft bristle tooth brush angled on the gum line. This has been shown to improve mouth odour considerably.

4. Nose, in this occurrence, the air exiting the nostrils has a pungent odour that differs from the oral odour. Nasal odour may be due to sinus infections , foreign bodies & commonly Post Nasal Drip. To fix this you will need to flush your sinuses with salt water. It’s very difficult. I recommend Oraltech Labs guidance to properly clear all sinus cavities.

5. Tonsils small bits of calcified matter in tonsillar crypts called tonsilloliths that smell extremely foul when released and can cause bad breath. To fix use warm to hot salt water mix to break the stones down or use a water pic to dislodge them.

6. Stomach, very uncommon source of bad breath. The esophagus is a closed and collapsed tube, and continuous flow (as opposed to a simple burp) of gas or putrid substances from the stomach indicates a health problem—such as reflux serious enough to be bringing up stomach contents or a fistula between the stomach and the esophagus. To fix use Oraltech Labs Guide to cure bad breath caused by GERD & acid reflux..

Management:

1. Gently cleaning the tongue surface twice daily is the most effective way to keep bad breath in control; that can be achieved using a tooth brush, tongue cleaner or tongue brush/scraper to wipe off the bacterial biofilm, debris, and mucus. Scraping or otherwise damaging the tongue should be avoided, and scraping of the V-shaped row of taste buds found at the extreme back of the tongue should also be avoided. Brushing a small amount of antibacterial mouth rinse or tongue gel onto the tongue surface will further inhibit bacterial action.

2. Eating a healthy breakfast with rough foods helps clean the very back of the tongue.

3. Chewing gum: Since dry-mouth can increase bacterial build-up and cause or worsen bad breath, chewing sugarless gum can help with the production of saliva, and thereby help to reduce bad breath. Chewing may help particularly when the mouth is dry, or when one cannot perform oral hygiene procedures after meals.

4. Gargling right before bedtime with an effective mouthwash.

5. Maintaining proper oral hygiene, including daily tongue cleaning, brushing, flossing, and periodic visits to dentists and hygienists. Flossing is particularly important in removing rotting food debris and bacterial plaque from between the teeth, especially at the gum line.

Hey, I like your input. You must be a doctor or so. I use salted water, 100% concentrated as a mouthwash then I use the toothpaste, especially that allows enamel of the teeth. It feels so clean and breathing good.

I don't think it's hereditary. It's all about hygiene. They don't brush their teeth very well. They don't clean their tongue and they don't floss.Perhaps you can casually mention it to them,if you have the opportunity.

I totally proved that is due lack of oral hygiene in their culture. Let's think someone who is 20-30 years old now. Their parents didn't have anyone to tell them how they should clean their teeth so then they continued the chain.

Most of chinese people I know most of times brush their teeth once a day, perhaps twice but that's seldom cases, I've seen it and also have asked.

Most of them don't know floss exists, and one more thing, even when they know dentist exist they never go to one as in most of western countries is done.

Can you imagine eat whatever you eat and leave rests of meat between your teeth? Wait for 2 weeks and that thing becomes so bad, so that's what we all smell when in metro, restaurants, club, etc.

Of course not ! You must have a infection, sinus infection is the most common living in polution as in Beijing ! Or dental infection. So a course of 10 days of Levofloxacin can cure it ! Try to find this antibiotics from a local medicines shop or in Carrefour medicine shop ,

Chinese peoples not only that they not wash their mouth, but they do oral sex to everyone they get in bed and do not wash their mouths !.... They know nothing about sexual illness and risks, other that HIV and 2-3 more viruses...  I never met western peoples in Europe to have that horrible smell ! No rasism here at all, but I say the truth ! I can hear around my apartment who take a shower and who don't... The water is running maybe 1-2 times per week and can hear that from my house ! So terrible ! This is why they smell ! Of course, not all, but most of them have a smell in mouth or nose !

Well the theory of how snakes developed venom states that long ago some kind of lizard had really bad breath, which helped it kill prey (infecting them like the komodo dragon). The bad breathed animal did well, bred, its offspring did will and somewhere down the line it became venom. So yes, bad breath could be hereditary, and someday Chinese might have fangs with venom....
