Q: Hanging out clothes to dry with pollution?

I don't have much of an option as my apartment in Beijing is rather small, but I always wondered whether this had any impact. Basically, with all the dust and pollution flying around, does it have any effect on the clothes or bed sheets that you hang out to dry outside?

Last time I hung my wet clothes outside, they came back all beige from the dust, so during those windy times I would advise you not to do the same.

During the windless times, I guess it'd be better, but the pollution still is an issue...

This situation has a few simple solutions, if it is of importance (or at least concern) to you.

You can either :

1.- Buy a clothes dryer.

2.- Install a "hanging line" inside the apartment walls to avoid the wind and the pollution.

3.- Only wash clothes on days with no wind.

Just remember, after clothes are dried and you wear them, you do not stay inside the apartment, you go out and then they will get exposed to the environment and pollution anyway.

I've seen some dryers at the Gree shops, but for the most part , Happy is correct, I stay away from buying white or bright clothes for eventually they get hosed

A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
