Today is the 15th day of the Hungry Ghost Festival. It's supposed to be the most haunting day of the festival since all manner of ghosts come out to play. Of course, there's no harm in getting a bite from food left lying around. Customs say that whatever food that was touched by them becomes tasteless. Maybe you could taste it to check if that's the case ?

Scandinavian:

checks out, there are two kinds of food in China, the ones with ginger/soy sauce taste and the ones without taste

How do the Chinese celebrate this festival?

louischuahm:

In China, much of the tradition has been lost. Today, the streets would be filled with dancing troupes decked out in ceremonial garb. Some will dress as ghosts and spirits. The parade will go through most part of town. In the afternoon, lots of praying and burning of incense joss sticks, hell bank notes and offerings will be held . In the evening , Chinese traditional operas will be performed for the ghosts. In some richer towns, a very lavish feast will be held and auctions of Chinese stuff will be held. All in, the festival is very noisy, colorful and fun. I haven't seen anything close to this here.

I see. I guess that explains all that burning in the evenings around my place (and I thought it was some 'garbage-burning ritual' ).  Aside from that, I haven't seen anything else to indicate that such a festival was being observed. Thanks for the answer!

You sure it wasn't a hungry foreign ghost in your house that ate those snacks?
