Why would anyone share that with you? If they were caught don't you think they would have been locked up or deported?
Not at my job , no, but they did check me out in San Li Tun this evening. Everything in order. In fairness, they were very polite and spoke passably well English.
Yes, the police came into my work and asked us all for our foreign expert certificates.
Funny thing, the company we work for had given us each a piece of paper that we thought was the foreign expert certificate. However, it was not. Turns out our company keeps our FECs in their head office in another city.
So then the police inspected our rooms, walking all over and snooping at our stuff. Then they told us to shut all the windows because leaving them open was a security risk. After that I think my boss paid them some money and they left.

FEC?? what is that?.... i am on workpermit for last 8yrs in china.. never heard of that...
I was with my GF doing some shopping in a commercial area near downtown (and the Train Station). This place is about three city blocks, one shop after another, good place to find bargains. And also, many persons here from India, Africa and Arabic countries too.
I stayed outside smoking a cigarette while my GF went inside for whatever she wanted. All of a sudden, a large number of Police cars and vans pulled up, all Policeman walked out and started canvassing business after business. A short Police woman came to me and said "Passport please", and I gave her my documents to see. She checked them, looked at me and said "You OK, thank you and good day", returned documents and left. But others may not have been so lucky, since a saw a few who looked as foreigners being led handcuffed to the waiting vans.
There was no real "show", no yelling or cursing. Just the normal large group of curious Chinese persons standing by and watching the proceedings. But they canvassed the whole area, and managed to find a few to take to Police Station for further action.

Chinese Law says you must carry your passport and registration form of residence address with you at ALL TIMES while in China. And I do follow the Law, but I do carry it in a secure place, inside a plastic bag, in a money belt, under my shirt.

If you get stopped by the police and you don't have your passport/residence certificate/work certificate on you they can drag you down to the police station and hold you there until someone brings the needed documents. If you are really unlucky they will throw a nice fine on top of it for not obeying the law. I have seen this happen several times. And that is why I always carry my originals on me despite the risk.
