Q: Has anybody called out someone for cutting in line, peeing on the sidewalk, etc? What happened?
I do it all the time. Last week I was at a pizza place in Wuhan, waiting patiently in line for ten minutes, and when it was finally my turn to order this mid-aged nong bitch behind me just steps in front of me and starts ordering, like I wasn't there. I wasn't having any of that, let me tell ya. I cut in with an angry "NI GAN MA?!" that silences the entire busy restaurant and shook my head with a thumb over the shoulder GTFO motion. The bitch withered and stepped back in line.
Be assertive and confident, even if your Chinese sucks. It ruins them. They're all so passive and insecure that any chance of a confrontation will send them running. The same goes for the hellooooooooooo retards. Just tell them to shut the fuck up, and if they start giggling just stop in your tracks and stare them down for an uncomfortable length of time. You will never lose a stare down here. Get your mean-mug ready.
Entering an elevator before you get out, littering, you get the idea.
Yes, the cutting in line. Sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Peoples response are mixed, sometimes it is the "wow, a white man who speaks Chinese" other times it is the "I know I suck so I will quietly do what the 100kg angry looking dude is saying to me"
Ah, the elevator or subway train entering. That is my favourite peeve. I am quite a big guy in Chinese terms, so just stiffen the shoulder a bit and keep on walking. As if there is no one there.
I try to avoid confrontation so I usually just stare and shake my head so they register my disgust and possibly lose face in front of a foreigner but that reaction is less likely to lead to an altercation than saying something.
I called out someone once for stealing my taxi, she started screaming at me like an animal, I called her a sha bi and she started getting hysterical about how a foreigner cursed at her and called her boyfriend over. Luckily he was a meek little dude and and his friends were nowhere to be seen so he just told me I shouldn't curse, I agreed and they left in the taxi that they stole.
Yes, many times! About 90% of the time, I get "sorry", and they immediately change what they were doing to the 'proper' thing (not cutting the queue, not blocking the exits of the metro, even smoking in non-smoking areas). There's been a few that haven't, and so glares, and the occasional comment (in seriously flawed Chinese) follows - but I presume those flaws are enough to make me unintelligible.
As I've said before, they know they're doing something they shouldn't - but no-one has bothered to tell them off, so they keep doing it.
I told the bloke who spat on the floor in the pool hall at the table next to us that he was a filthy stinking grub and that if he did it again I was going to knock him out. Even though I didn't see him do it again it didn't stop the mongrels on the table one more over from doing it.
I'm sure he couldn't compute what filthy stinking grub meant but he probably got the drift.
I believe they do this sort of thing because they aren't fully developed, for one reason or another. It's quite animalistic, although I wouldn't think an animal would chunder in its own swag.
When the old generation people try to get in front of me on the bus, I stand my ground and make sure they don't get passed me, and if I feel I am being pushed I make sure I won't budge an inch. I hope that does not come across harsh, but people need to know, this is not civil.

I tend to let most things slide, but I do call them out on line cutting. Normally they look very sheepish and slink to the back of the line with their tail between their legs.
One time in McDonalds in Sanya I told someone to paidui, and she went absolutely ballistic (of course it was a middle aged woman). She was screaming, calling me a foreign idiot and it's the Chinese way and if I don't like it I should fuck off... I fully understood her, but it was several years ago and at that time I didn't have the vocab in my armory to come back at her so I just stared at her. Luckily the other Chinese in the queue didn't think it was the Chinese way and actually kicked her right out of the restaurant. She was shouting and screaming all the way, some people here just don't get that they are not all that special or important.
Last night someone tried to cut in front of me while in line to buy train tickets. After I berated him in Chinese, I finally let him and his friend buy their tickets first because I could see their urgency. But not before I made them give me a cigarette. We laughed about it afterward, they had never seen a laowai treat them this way before.
It depends on my mood. Sometimes i do nothing and wait. They are too dumb to even get they are being rude. But often i lose my mind. If a guy does cut in front of me i grab his collar and give the dog a tug.
One lady tried to do it while i was waiting to get my veggies weighed at the supermarket. I grabbed her bag and Tom Brady'ed the bag 3 rows over.
Women will talk back. Men wont.
One thing that drove me crazy was if i did something I always had the feeling that I was the wrong one in everyones eyes. Foreigner goes too far or something. It drove me insane.
If you speak a little chinese , getting the crowd on your side is essential. Make it look like you are speaking to help everyone. Something like" What are you doing? You didnt see all of us waiting in line? Fuck off." ( ni gan ma? Ni mei kan dao women zai pai dui ma? Gun!)
Safest way to be a dick and be morally right and win the crowd.
Chewbacca:
This sums it up. In China it is not about who is right or wrong, it is about who the mob sides with. If anyone has ever watched the police deal with trouble they will see this. The policeman arrives. Checks to see who the mob sided with and forces the other guy to pay compensation. Social Harmony is preserved and justice is sidelined.
estern:
So you threw a ladies bad 3 aisles over, for doing something which for them is totally normal. And then you seem surprised that the crowd react as if you are the one in the wrong. Hoiking another persons bag across a supermarket is a far greater offense than line cutting.
BHGAL:
i always protect my position in the line....it really is simple... a scowl and a "fu..k off" sends them scurrying.
just did it yesterday, at a police station, and the "cop" I was dealing with thanked me for doing what I suspect she is not supposed to do....she said, "thanks" for telling that idiot to "get lost" ... it was good for me, and her. did not hurry her up though, getting done what I was doing.... she just wanted me to help her Dad learn English and maybe come live in her home, to help all the family. This was a policewoman enticing me .... it was tough to ignore and get my paperwork and run.
Silencing nongs can be fun. I've embarrassed many . People have let them get away with bad behavior for too long . Then they go abroad and think their behavior is fine .
I once said something to a lady about to make her daughter pee in front of 2000 years pot (it was in a museum). I told her *"WTF, the toilets are just 10 meters away"*. Deer in the headlights, she made her daughter pee in the corridor : toilets were 5 meters away. The lady was not looking like some countryside folk going to the city : well dressed with all the exterior signs of wealth.
sorrel:
i have occasionally been asked to mind young children of under 10 years old.
They have all been taught to say when they think they need to find a toilet and then hold it in until one is found.
It's not rocket science people!!
It is called 'toilet training'.
My Chinese isn't good enough to chew them out, but I definitely let them know through body language. If they cut in line, I'll jump in front of them. If they're talking unreasonably loud in a restaurant, I'll let them know it's annoying me. If they spit, I made a disgusted face.
What do they do? They actually usually give a soft apology, and stop. Until I leave.
