Only in translation, so a lot of meaning is lost. some of it can be quite beautiful, but the full meaning can be lost when translated into english.

Only in translation, my favorite is Han Shan or Cold Mountain, a trickster-hermit who was kicked out of his monastery for disobedience, then lived in a remote area in SW Zhejiang, I think 2000 years ago or so. He carved poetry into rocks and trees and gained a legendary reputation. I understand he wasn't popular among the literary establishment of the day, but had devoted fans including royalty who saw the quality in his writings and made sure they were preserved.

Also the US based translator Red Pine/Bill Porter has done good translations of some Chinese poets especially of the Buddha/Tao variety, including Han Shan and Lao Tzu. I would like to learn more characters so I have a better idea how the poems sound in the native tongue.

As a Chinese native speaker, I cant understand most Chinese poetry. When I studied it in middle school, I found it a bit too emotional and pretentious 

to happywanderer.then I suggest you read some poetry by LiuYong柳永.He is the coolest poet in our history I think.He made a mistake and got a powerful officer angry which meant his career as a politician ended.then he spent all of his life into writting poems about love,romance and this kind of stuff.and built a great reputation in whores(maybe sounds a little weird?) every girl,woman sang his poems.in the end he died cause of sex disease.the whores paid for his funeral even some of them never met him..
