Q: Has anyone done a masters in China?

I heard they are three years long, which seems far too much. Do you think it's worth doing?

I recently graduated from one of the top ten universities in China with 3.5+ GPA but to be honest its kinda hollow. My suggestion is to think by yourself which one of these two are your priority from your education in China:

1. Knowledge. If this is what you're looking for, go to other country perhaps Taiwan, Hongkong, Singapore. (I assume those 3 because you're asking about China, and those 3 speak chinese too)

2. Degree/certificate. Welcome to China, new semester will start in august/september for most school. Just pick the "top" universities so you got a good face in china, for chinese class the fee are around 20-50k depend on major. Language/literature are 20k ish, economic and science are 30-35k ish, medicine are 50k ish. International class (taught in English) price is double compared to the Chinese class.

I also just graduated from a top 5 university in Chinaand I can tell you this. If you want to work in China/with China this can be a good idea. However the academic standard I experienced at this top university was a complete joke.

If you do your master in China, learn the language (if you don't speak it already), network, network and network even more, and last read and study on your own. The exams and papers, even my thesis I just phoned in and still got a 3.4 GPA. Like the guy above me said, in the end it's just about the degree.

If you want an academic challenge, or a degree to take back home or actually gain knowledge yeah, don't do a degree in China.

DrMonkey:

I taught in a top 5 university in China. I confirm completely what you say, exactly my observation as well.

I finished mine in two years which is very possible for most though they officially give you 3 years to complete the program.  Like others, mine was at a top 5 university (I wouldn't recommend a lower tier university).  As far as whether it is worthy or not, it depends on what you will study, your future plans and how much you have to pay.  Some majors are quite useful to study here, especially with those that have something obvious to do with China like teaching Chinese as a foreign language, China studies, Internatonal relations and the like.  If you plan to stay in China for some time they are also useful for making contacts and finding jobs.  Finally there have been many scholarships available in the past for foreign students.  If you can get one and do it for basically free then it becomes much more worthy as you'll pay an arm and a leg for one back home.

I obtained my bachelor and going to get my master by the end of this year ! I agree with what being said above . If you are looking for knowledge then I don't suggest Chinese education system   But  you still have a chance like  you can get your degree first which will allow  you to find an internship and gain practical knowledge instead . Companies in china don't care what's in your  brain and what can you do rather than looking at your  GPA and the university that you have attended !!

If you're paying for it, and worried about getting a bang for your buck then I would highly dissuade you from doing a degree in China.  There is no real quality that comes out of a Chinese degree, except for 2-3 years of "China time."  You get a residence permit that won't expire until you graduate.

How you use the China time is what makes your useless China degree useful.  If you can find good experiences here, you may treat it as 2-3 years of a gap year traveling and chilling at home with schoolmates.  If you are interested in language learning, you may learn a lot of Chinese from the endeavor.

If you can branch into a few internships in some nice chinese companies or even foreign ones, that may be worth it all in the end too.

No, all I have done is a bunch of BS.  LOL

My friend is doing one in Shenzhen.  It is 2 years, but the first year is in class, the second year he just has to defend his thesis.  He can do anything and go anywhere the second year.
