Q: Has anyone ever lived in Weifang?

I may have an assignment coming up there soon and I want to get a feel for what it is like if possible.  I know it is small (only 1 million in the city center), cold (near Harbin) and famous for chicken, toilets, deisel engines and an annual kite festival.  Asside from that, I know nothing.

Does it have an expat community or any western food other than MdDs & KFC?

i hv been on travel to the place...For my memory, it's an ok small town.....Shandong ppl are pretty friendly.....

dont think they have expat community there....you will be the only expat...or not more than 5 i think.......only Qingdao got more expats....

Not sure if they even have KFC..etc......but it might changed  since i was there few years ago....

I like a snowy Happy new year, rather than a no sky one...Beijing's time to ban the cars---the only solution for the time being...

Hi there i live in the next city across, in my city theres about 8 expats. But for Weifang i know of at least 10 ppl are there, also you have a Wal-mart lol(not American) But also near one of the bus stations there is a place call Justco which as got some westen products in. Welcome to Shandong. Oh yeah forgot to say also Pizza Hut there and the rest like K.F.C. As for being near Harbin, give up thats miles away at least 6hrs on the train. It's starting to get warm now and it's only cold for 3 mths.

Never lived there but been through it enough times. The city centre is quite well developed. There are several places for buying western or fast food. The transportation is quite convenient with Beijing (about three hours), Tianjin (two and a half hours) and Qingdao (two hours) easily reachable by very regular express train service. It is an agricultural region with a vast array of farm fresh foods available including organics. Another sizeable city nearby is Zibo which also has quite a developed infrastructure though a little more polluted than Weifang. Summers are anything but cold (can be quite hot and sultry). It is not really at all close to Haerbin. The winters can be a bit chilly but survivable for most.

Of course! Even two years ago when you asked, there was one, they just hung out in certain spots I guess are hard to find randomly.

How about y'all use Facebook and search for "Weifang Expats" a group I manage. 150+ members currently! Welcome!

Well, it's called the kite city. Pretty international since the 90s. They host annual kite festivals every year. Very hospitable, spacious place to live. But there is not much decent expat group so far. So I am organizing a new community group on wechat for expats living in Weifang Shandong. You can find me on wechat: evayanchina

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
