Q: Has anyone heard about the new rules for e-bikes in Nanning

I just overheard from a local Chinese friend that by August 15, 2013 all ebikes in use in Nanning will need to be registered, and pay for and obtain license plates to circulate legally. I have no problem with that, even if done as a neat way to raise more money for a few higher ups retirement plans.  What does bothers me is that only ebikes running on 36 volts or less, with a length of less than 36 inches, and a weight of less than 36 kilos (someone likes number 36), will be allowed to receive the proposed plates.  Over 90 % of the existing bikes in Nanning do not meet that criteria, including mine.

Does anyone has any information from the horse's mouth, not just street rumors and fiction?. I also was told that as you go to get registered, if bike does not meet the requirements, will be confiscated on the spot. And I can not find any information anywhere...... Will appreciate good feedback, and thanks

I think the bikes mentioned above are exempt from registration..  the bigger/faster bikes are the ones that are to be registered....Zhanjiang, Zhongshan and a 3rd city ( I forget) maybe Nanning.. are test site cities for these new regs....... July 1st I had to have a license plate.... and MAYBE Sept. 1st,  I will need a drivers license.

I will continue my search... I did have a website that had some info... patience patience patience .....

BHGAL:

I have counted about 5 bikes with licenses so far.(July 1 was our date).. mine and my "uncles" and maybe 3 others..............  300,000 to go ....  and it took my wife a whole day after arriving at the lineup at 6 am ... to get the thing registered and get the plate...

she just came home the first day... left home earlier the next day.

that would be a bummer, 36 volt bike aren't very good, 48v 20a are good, I was thinking of getting a 72v next time.
