Q: Has anyone here been to Beidaihe? What was it like?

Have been reading up on a few beach locations on the net. Has anyone visited Beidaihe in North China. Aparently it used to be the weekend getaway location for high level party officials. Are ther reasonable hotels there that anyone would recommend. Will it still be Ok to visit in the colder weather, obviously I wont be swimming at that time of year but would love to just relax by the ocean and eat some nice seafood. Have read there are some nice sections of the Great Wall nearby as well with a lot less tourists than Badaling and the other places nearer to Beijing.

It is okay, not much to do, you can visit Qinhuangdao while you were there, it's another small city just on the outskirt of Beidaihe and they have the Eastern starting point of Great Wall.

It's pretty because it's on the coast. In warm months it's swamped with Russians. Part of the city is actually like a small Russian village. It's kind of weird.

I've heard that it's not bad but you have to choose your visit carefully in order to avoid the crushing hordes of holiday makers. It's supposed to be much milder and pleasant than Beijing so many people go there for weekend trips from Beijing to escape the heat. I have yet to go but have always been curious.

It's made it onto a top 100 of beaches in the world by CNN http://edition.cnn.com/2013/05/28/travel/100-best-beaches/index.html
