Q: Has anyone hired a tutor for homeschooled American kids? Can't afford international school tuition!

I would be coming with 14, 13, 10 year old children. Two actually speak fluent Mandarin. Trying to figure out how to keep them educated while living overseas. I also wonder how they would meet friends if they don't attend school? I would be working full-time so that is why I can't do the homeschooling part.

Honestly, I dont see why they cannot study in a Chinese school if they speak Mandarin. If you should feel that there is a "deficiency" in their schooling, then as a parent you can help supplement it.

ambivalentmace:

no, im not a guapo , all i have been called that sometimes, i used to have a successful business recruiting nurses from philippines and placing them in hospitals around america, i paid for their nclex exam, flight and review courses , took care of the visa paperwork and got 9000 dollars when they received their first paycheck. it was a good business until obama said the jobs should go to americans and stopped the 200000 visas every year,

i started sending them to canada instead but canada raised the fees to 3300 dollars and made it impossible to make a profit.

the problem now is not enough nursing schools , nobody wants to teach in us for 50k and they can work for 80k, so now i recruit nurses with a masters degree for nursing colleges and universities under a different professional visa status but the money is slower and it takes longer.

shanghai has many filipinos with masters degrees working as maids teaching rich chinese kids english, when america stopped taking nurses ,the middle east lowered the salaries , supply and demand. 36000 licensed nurses sitting in philippines without a job, with the baby boom coming, america will have no choice.

my state has a 2 year wait for nursing school , so i sent my stepdaughter to mountain view college in valencia city for 30000 pesos a year and now works in america.

not a filipino but know a good deal when i see it.

Most chinese schools have English programs. You should know this! How long have you lived here? I think you have to pay up front before you can enroll your child in the english program at your school. It shouldn't cost that much. Last time I heard it I heard it was pretty cheap at the public schools maybe 1500 kuai. I believe that's what I heard. They pay in advance and that's how you enroll your child in the english classes. They will teach Mandarin also as this is China! The english class is the second language here not Chinese!

GuilinRaf:

Maybe in the bigger cities, like Beijing, Shanghai etc. Not in the smaller cities and definitely not in the countryside.

Guilin did not have that kind of program. Their "English programs" were pathetic, even the few times that they had a foreigner teaching the class. The foreigner worked hard, yes, but more often than not they themselves were full time college students which academic loads of their own.

Last summer, I taught summer school, it is a special program for the English teachers who teach English in the smaller towns surrounding Beijing.  Almost none of them spoke English. Of the 60+ students I taught, only 5 spoke passable English. And, these are the teachers.... How long have YOU lived here?

If you can't afford to give your 3 kids proper education (if that is even possible in China), then you really shouldn't come to China. If your kids aren't going to school, they will each need a full-time professional tutor, since they are all at different levels of learning.

Were they homeschooled in your country?  Can your spouse help with homeschooling?  Like someone said you can probably enroll them in the Chinese school if they speak well enough Mandarin, whether or not you want to do that is up to you.  Also, check around again with the international schools, though they advertise a certain price the price can usually be negotiated especially if you have more than 1 kid.

I wouldn't come to China with children of that age, especially the 14 year old. I wouldn't even trust international schools for children of that age. If you feel you must come to China then in my honest opinion the only option for quality education is boarding school and obviously that has repercussions on family life and most certainly finances as they aren't usually cheap (at least not in the UK).

Schooling in China at those ages is all about Gaokao prep and I mean almost exclusively Gaokao prep, nothing else, rote memorisation of an inordinate amount of fact based information. I have heard some good things about the 'international schools' but the problem is which nations curriculum (if any) do they follow and how will that affect your children's futures?

Good luck.
