I've never had my carry-on luggage checked when coming in to China.  And it doesn't seem they're checking the checked bags either.  If that "small-scale" suits you, then I wouldn't think you'd have too many issues.  Of course, there's always that chance they might wanna see whatcha got.....

But, I did have my luggage screened this last time when LEAVING China.  After my carry-on bag went through the scanner, they asked me if I had some books.  I said yes.  The lady opened my bag, checked out what I had (a couple early American classics, purchased in China oddly enough), and then sent me on my way.  I thought it was a bit strange.

I have a whole load of english books here. I brought ten with me when I returned a couple of years ago. However, I have been buying them from taobao ever since. I looked into importing books as I wanted to open a book shop here for expats. The policy on subject matter is not too prohibitive, but the import taxes are fairly absurd.

I brought some books in my checked luggage, but only 8-10 for myself. 

Why is everything getting a downvote?

  I brought a complete set of the Clockwise study books, including teacher's book, student's book and resources, levels one to five, plus a number of other teachers manuals, resource books, books of grammar exercises, all sorts. Had so many books the only other thing I was allowed on with was a toothbrush.
