Q: Has anyone noticed this too?

I have been in China on a permanent basis for two years now, and prior, I (since 1997) would come for visits from 3 to 4 times per year, from 4 to 8 weeks each time.  I always felt something was missing as I "navigated" the streets in different cities, as today it finally dawn on me what I was missing.

Have you ever seen in China either a Police Patrol car, or an ambulance, or a fire truck with the siren going at full blast and the emergency lights flashing down any street ?.  I have not, ever.  And that amuses me a lot, no emergencies at all ?

Care to share your experiences along these lines, and venture a guess?.

I saw an ambulance once...no sirens and stuck in gridlock.

Never seen a fire truck.

See many police cars and trucks driving on roads and highways with lights going but I have been told the lights are always on when they are driving..means nothing.

I've never seen any car being pulled over, but I once saw a drinking and driving road check, it was 9am and they were arresting a drunken truck driver.

I've seen a few ambulances going pretty fast with the flashing lights going.  No sirens or horns though. Honestly, I see civilian drivers that drive more aggressively and with more urgency on a daily basis....taxi drivers come to mind....

I've heard sirens, but haven't been near the road when an ambulance goes by that I can remember. Maybe they know that flashing lights and sirens will not make anyone get out of the way?

Ive seen an ambulance and a fire truck both once.  Never a cop car though.  The ambulance was horrible, like a minivan :S

Nope. I've never seen an ambulence in the places I've stayed. Tianjin and Beijing. Barely heard a siren.
Kind of scary when you consider the situation in which one may get an accident.

Can't recollect a cop chasing anyone. Don't recall any ambulances racing thru the streets, not that they could anyways. I have seen policemen in the streets but they turn a blind eye to traffic infractions. Firetrucks? Saw a remote control firetruck once, that was pretty cool.

However I have seen people driving about in police cars with kids sitting in the front seat on mama's laps.

I went to Canada last August and visited a RCMP buddy of mine that I used to play hockey with. We were having a few beers and I decided to jump on Youtube to show him some Harbin traffic. Completely blew his mind!

i have seen plenty amblances and police card with siren.... majority are for dealing with road accidents... may be road accidents are not so critical in metros... but in lower tier cities its very common on roads which are not inside the city normally..

have seen normal police (not traffic) cars also going with siren.. dont know for what!!

have seen fire trucks with siren many times as well.... mostly to extinguish fire ..

Mostly home fires... caused by electrical short circuit.. i must say.. electrical wiring in china is terrible.. expecially poor houses.. one tiny wire and they connect many heaters to it!!.. once i asked them switch off all then touch the man wore.. it was sooooo hot!

I had to redo the Switchboards of the villa i stay now.... main line coming with 60A MCB.. then inside its 80A!!... smilar case with distribution lines...

One time the fire engine was for extingish fire when a car parked roadside suddenly catch fire

Also fire trucks come to rescue ppl who try to commit suicide..

Conclusion - outside metros..its very common..

Maybe China is some kind of alternative universe where the general traffic drives at breakneck speeds makes all sort of fkn horn noise and ignores red lights etc while the police fire brigade and ambulance service drive quietly within the speed limit and obey the road ruleslaugh
