Q: Has anyone observed any admirable qualities in Chinese people or culture?

I've been here over 2 years and have logged countless hours traveling this country.  I can name a few:

1. Modesty:  Not all Chinese are pompous and selfish.  A great many of my friends have an overall modest view of themselves and their capabilities.  As a rule, they don't like to force their opinion on others and prefer to be "quietly assertive" instead.  This can be carried to an extreme at times, but  I admire this in them.

2. Tolerance:  Bad employers, other people's bad manners, and other forms of mistreatment do not visibly anger them as much as Western people.  They have learned to keep their cool when under unfair treatment.  This is a Chinese quality.

3. Their gardens:  Every major city and most minor ones have a river, and many wonderful gardens.  I can stay for hours on end in these beautiful places in the city.  Granted, the rivers are often polluted but the Chinese certainly have an eye for beautiful spaces.  There are few places more serene than a Chinese garden.

Perhaps you can think of more to share.

I've been attracted to China since I was quite quite young, and I think the reason for this is that they are a people who are generally very quick to smile and share a joke. I also feel i've been shown marvelous hospitality and been made to feel very welcome indeed by the Chinese in general over the past 7 years. Also the girls are hot.

There you go; 1,2,3 admirable qualities for you:)

Xinruyen, well done post for sure.  I am not sure that I would called it "tolerance" however but I probably would have called it "endurance".  My (Chinese) manager always preaches "endurance" to us foreigners under difficult situations.

xinyuren:

Yes, endurance and tolerance are kissing cousins.  Both very fine qualities to have.

Xinyuren couldn't have said it better. I agree with all those things.

For me I was really suprised at how welcoming alot of Chinese people are towards me and others. I can't even count the number of times a complete stranger has invited me over to their table and started buying me food and drinks, people inviting me to their homes, people taking me out to places to do certain activities like sports and paying for everything.  When I first came here I always thought "what's the catch" I never fully trusted people who would treat me so kindly.

I'm from America and I don't see this happening really. At least not with strangers. Of course America is a lot more diverse as well though so that could be part of that.

xinyuren:

i have a very outstanding story regarding this topic.  Maybe one day I will share it.  Suffice to say, I agree with you.

Legs,, lots and lots of legs.. I first came to China for a vacation, the first thing I noticed was everyone was Chinese and so many,, yeah right dummy,,, well it was just something I'd never seen before. I've always like history and old architecture. I'm fascinated by old building grand or simple. I was really surprised at how big and new and modern many cities are, but I don't like big cities. I like a smaller city, love to get out and see the rural areas, have a look at how China was. Is there an old run down part of town, yes I want to see it,,, so I don't know how to explain it, everyone stares and talks about me, but I always feel safe. I can go any where and not get hassled. Thats pretty cool.

I admire their endurance for hardship. The dedication to staying fit and healthy starting at a young age. Commitment to family and the importance they place on saving money.

Re the endurance for hardship above, I concur.  Re the commitment to family, I also concur; re the commitment to saving money, that is out of necessity for lack of a serious social net and finally re the commitment to staying fit, well, frankly, that is one thing with which I would seriously but politely disagree, at least for the men.  Heavy, heavy drinking; heavy, heavy smoking; the little and often numerous visits to the specialized barbershops and the like.  Perhaps physical fitness is just now coming into vogue but just perhaps, anyway, this is just IMHO.

thewetblanket:

I agree that the average lifestyle for middle aged Chinese men might not fit the criteria, but I do appreciate that starting from an early age Chinese children are taught that morning exercise should be included in one's daily activities. I think that if these things were pushed more aggressively in the west there might not be such a rise in obesity.

they have in many occasions proved to me that they can actually result very patience, lots of friends of mine(including myself sometimes) shout at Chinese people when they have done something wrong to us, even at times  when they are actually innocent of that they are been attacked for. in my country, no matter who you are or where you come from you will find it very hard if you ever shout at any local, you can only get rid of it if any local did not see you or notice, I really appreciate them for such behavior. 我应该说谢谢您中国

I have mentioned before I really respect their temperance. Yes we've all seen the ganbei frat-boy stuff at business meetings. But, on the whole, the Chinese do not depend on liquor for a good time. The people waltzing in the park and stuff like that I think is great and that alcohol avoidance would be something the west would do well to learn.

Most Admired Qualities of Chinese:

- Respect for elders. Certainly more than many western countries.

- Conservative social presence; modest dress, modest display. TV as well.

- Community exercising. Especially the older people. outdoors, park etc.

- Men are men. Women are women. For that matter children are children.

- Seeing many young adults, on their own, visiting cultural sites.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
