Q: Has anyone run into an "age limit" issue

Many ads are now stating age preferences. I have alos been told that 60 is the max age for Foreign teachers in Sichuan. I Shaanxi the limit must be higher because I know of FTs who are well over 60. I am getting the idea that this is a provincial, rather than a national, issue. I would like to know which provinces will hire an ft over 59. By the way. I have a "B" card.

There are foreigners in China working past the legal age limit of 60.  Whether you can do that depends on:

1) supply and demand (how desperate the school is);

2) the teacher's credentials and experience;

3) location, location, location; and

4) the guanxi and document magic the school has at its disposal.

A common ploy is for the elder teacher to work as a "volunteer" using a tourist (L) visa.  The teacher has to make a visa run to an outside jurisdiction every few months to re-set the clock.  This is not illegal, but it does bend the rules a bit.  Don't expect medical insurance and other common benefits afforded to regular teachers.  Expect a lower salary and payment in cash, with no taxes paid or other deductions.

Some offshore third party employers (commonly used with international schools) also have ways of getting past the age limit.

These employment methods for elder workers can also be used outside the education arena.

I seen a disgusting ageist employment post from some school in Kazakhstan saying upper age-limit was like 40.  Idiots.

How did the world get the idea that older people do not need employment?   The most needy (aged) are sometimes the most poorly treated.  We are a deficient species.

hi2u:

I really enjoyed my old Kazakhstan wife when we married. But then we divorced three years later when she was 15 because her voice start to change

I think they won't look that close if you already have the new working visa WP card.

Age discrimination exists in every city. People in their 60s are as energetic as people in their 50s nowadays.

I knew alot of over 60 teachers in Shandong, but most have left and we have one doing the tourist visa trips still with us that we could not get a work visa.

The northern cold provinces tend to be more lenient on age and nationality but that could be changing but large university can get some old farts a permit but training schools don't seem to get the job done. I would imagine the provinces using the new card probably have a computer code that kicks out the card for passing a 60 year rule built into the software, so when it's nationwide, things could be impossible.

60 years of age is the limit to obtain employer paid health insurance n China.  Once you reach 60, your health coverage ill be denied, and th only legal wy to bypass this is by obtaining private coveage paid by you.  Medicare and Medicaidwillnot be accepted.

This applies to locals and to foreignrs too9.

The keys to this question are 1) the region and 2) the level, or type of school you will be teaching in.  I have recently learned (for example) that the city of Shenzhen has eliminated age limits.  Also, most colleges and universities do not have the 'age 60' limit.  You probably won't make as much at a college/university as you might at a learning center or ower level school, but this is often offset by having older students who are a bit more disciplined/dedicated.  I have been at a college in Guangzhou now going into my second year and I am quite happy.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
