Actually, I have taken it.  There are two trains -- a Russian train and a Chinese train.  The Russian train has different kind of sleepers -- 2 berth coupe, 4 berth, and then the large open type of sleeper that the Chinese call hard sleepers.  The Chinese train has 4 berth and and the hard sleepers.  There are two different routes that you can choose from -- one through Mongolia and the other up and through Harbin.

It's a long trip -- about seven days if I remember correctly.  You can get off a various stops to stretch your legs.

In any case, I might suggest that you read here about it :

www.seat61.com

Additionally, you will need a visa for Russian and depending upon your nationality, a visa for Mongolia, if you take the train that goes through Mongolia.

The trip is well-worth it in the summer.  Friends of mine who did it in the winter found it totally boring.

Yep I did the trip from Moscow to Beijing via Manzhouli and Harbin. I am Canadian and I couldn't be bothered going through the whole visa application for Mongolia. But interestingly American's don't need a visa to enter Mongolia.  Seat61 is probably the best resource online. There are also a coupleof good books about the Trans Siberian. I went with the Lonely Planet Trans Siberian Railway.

I did the trip in August, by myself.  I bought my tickets along the way as I went. I had a blast. But 7 days on a train might get a little boring for some!
