I've been here a while and it seems like the fashion has improved- much less cutesy crap and more proper grown up clothes that actually look good. Maybe cos I'm in Beijing though...
It's better than the terrible 90's comeback that's swept Europe and America...
I really want China to stay transfixed with the Tang Dynasty look. Chinese girls wearing qipao's really do something for me (I have to admit though that the modern look qipao's that are cut off just below the butt are also a big improvement on the Tang Dynasty style).
probably because you have been in China for a while it all begins to look good.
It would still look wrong on me, so i stay with timeless and classic: simple lines and good quality

I'd say everyone has the style of being fashion. My sister likes those cute clothes but I like the sexy tight dress.
I would have agreed a few months ago. Far less minnie mouse shirts on 30 year old women..... But then winter came and with it came the short skirts with the black tights on every single woman. So no. Get back to me next summer.

I was in Wuchuan, a 4/5th tier city near Zhanjiang recently & was amazed by the number of middle-aged women wearing stockings/leggings under very short shorts. Maybe they were aiming for a MILF/Cougar look but it didn't do it for me.
Even if it had improved, they are still yet to discover the magic of washing clothes and the wonders of the iron.
It makes me laugh when I see them on the street, and they have clearly tried to look good and have taken time to put on make up or they have picked out a more or less matching ensemble for the evening, but the dress or shirt is more crinkled than a crinkle-cut chip. I mean, if they're going to spend so much time (and they do) trying to look good, then why not spare 15 minutes and give that outfit a quick iron?
even if some people are donning more decent fashionwear, it would be hard to spot them among the hordes of 'traditional' women who flaunt what they've got so conspicuously. it would be like trying to spot a mini-kiosk without advertisements, in between multiple neon-lighted megamalls that are loud & proud to be newly opened for business.
I constantly see young adult to older adult men wearing black suit jackets with navy blue pants and brown shoes, or some other combination of those colors, sometimes with sneakers, and one or more of those items will be made of that shiny sparkly material. So I'll say no, the fashion has not improved.
Short answer-No! I don't think they dress age-appropriate. The number of mothers I've seen dragging their emperors and empresses around while wearing 6-inch stilettos and a skirt that leaves little to the imagination is countless.
Further, take a look at footwear. It's hideous.
Not really fashion but yesterday I saw a soldier in full dress uniform but he had white sneakers on.
If you're interested in the Chinese fashion industry, there's a show on CCTVNews (English channel) tonight at 22:15pm called Crossover looking at whether or not "Made in China" can become a fashion label, something more than its current tacky plastic reputation.

no doubt about it... the fashion is improving
now a long story
when I first came here ... I told the wife and daughter(20) to get rid of the black
I stand by that
it hasn't worked much ..... they continue to buy black shit.... once in a while, something colorful which they so proudly display for me.... then never wear it.
3 years of coaching though and at least the daughter is getting it....Mom never will, which is fine, love her as she is.....
My daughter in law could fill a very nice bikini out well, if she would agree to wear one... she is curvy and cute and model-like, but just doesn't know it.... shy and simple and driven. to the very evasive money and academics and excape from China. I constantly try to tell her... life is not that much greener on the other side....China is OK..... OK..enough .... any of you young guys looking for a wife? .. she's second best, I got #1
BHGAL:
yes I am tired of looking after her... 25 years old and gorgeous and still looking for that real nice guy .... no chinamen fit that, so I thought I'd put this on here...the bhgal dating site.....a curvy china young smart lady
People here are obsessed with fashion as a concept, without really understanding that concept. They don't know what "fashionable" really means, but want to be fashionable. I have literally seen clothes with the word "fashion" written on them... like putting "fashion" all over your shirt or pants makes you fashionable.
