I read somewhere that a person recently called an emergency number but was forced to listen to an automated 1 minute ad for iphone first. What a nightmare! Have any of you ever called an emergency number here and what's your experience been?
10 years 40 weeks ago in Health & Safety - China
Not here But I had to wait a good 5 minutes plus for Queensland police to answer the phone when a guy was threatening people with a knife
the 000 operator could do nothing else either
It would be safer to try and handle it yourself rather than get the authorities involved with anything I think. Even if someone were trying to kill you...
Not intentionally though my phone (during locked status) did managed to call the emergency services by itself as somehow my trouser pocket had caused it to punch the numbers. Luckily, I hung up just before it got through.
No. My expectations for anything good to come from it would be very low. When you see how ambulances crawl through the city, how police officers just stand and observe, then what good could possibly come from it. The other day at a nearby construction site there was a fire. Thick black smoke, probably diesel burning, rose from the site for half an hour. No fire trucks came.
In this country you are on your own, at best, maybe mother in law is there to help you, then you are royally screwed.
Yes. Took them four hours to come because they didn't understand my Chinese, and didn't speak English. They also couldn't find me based on my phone GPS signal. They had no texting mechanism in place either. The only reason they found us is because a neighbor helped.
I've never had to call the local equivalent of 911. Wouldn't know what to say anyway since my Chinese is nonexistent. I mean, what if I slip in the shower and crack my head open, break a hip, or something? What if I have a heart attack in the middle of the night? Why would I call 911 here if I can't get through to them.
I've discussed this a few times with my GF in Shanghai and I guess, at the end of the day, she's my 911. But we're in two different cities. She'd have to be on the ball to know who to call in my town and arrange for the ambulance. Even then, the ambulance wouldn't know how to get to my place, located in a huge jumble of buildings and trees.
I do worry about it sometimes.
Never did I call an emergency number here nor do I ever plan to! I think the number is 119 or something like that. (!
He he, I said: "119"!
Had done once... had a traffic accident with an electric bike..
My wife said as per rules i must call 110...
I called 110.. no english so hang up...
They immediately called back thinking i am in some kind of trouble... I handed over the phone to the accident victim.. police arrived in ~10 mins time - this was at a remote location - so 10 mins was pretty fast!
First, and for the benefit of those that do not know, please find below a list of the emergency numbers used in most cities within Mainland China.
They are:
1.- 110 for Police
2.- 114 for Directory Assistant
3.- 119 for Fire
4.- 120 to request an ambulance
5.- 122 to report a traffic accident
6.- 12117 to inquire the correct time.
7.- 12121 for the weather report.
And second, I had the need to dial 110 and request Police assistance about 6 weeks ago when I went to a local mall for some ice cream at Haagen Dazs, and someone placed a lock on my ebike while I was inside. One of the waitresses told me that sometimes that happens when they will try to steal your bike, put the lock on it so you can not move it, and when you leave the area to seek help they come back, remove the lock and take the bike.
So, I called 110 and asked the Police for help. They showed up in less than 10 minutes, 3 of them. One spoke passable English, and stayed with me, the other two went to all parking attendants for the Mall and questioned them. Of course, they informed Police thy knew nothing. Then Police requested the tapes from the video cameras showing the parking area where my bike was, and nmanaged to detect one attndant placeing the lock on the bike. The security chief from the Mall was contacted, and asked to bring that employee to the Police in front of Haagen Dazs. They were told that the employee was on his dinner break, so Police intructed him to call the employee and ask him to return immediately. He showed up about 15 minutes later, and he wanted 100 yuan to remove the lock. The Police told him that if he insisted on 100 Rmb for removing the lock, they will arrest him the moment he took the money and charged with extorsion. So, to make it short, after a lot of talking back and forth, the Police got tired and told the fellow to remove the lock immediately or go to jail. Te guy reluctanly did (after he had sworn he had lost the key to the lock).
In all honestly, I was very pleased with the speed of thge response, and the fact that they stayed there for almost 2 and a half hours to make sure I was not blackmailed, or my bike stolen. And yes, I invited them for a try of Haagen Dazs ice cream, and they loved it.
Yesterday I was confirmed in it being pointless to call emergency services
There was a fire in one of the buildings in our community.
3 fire trucks comes, stops at one entrance, the community people tell them (I assume) to go to another entrance.
They get to the entrance I am standing by, the community people manning that entrance, spends 1 minute 40 seconds figuring out where the building they are asking for is. Then they send the fire trucks back to the entrance they first tried to enter through.
Now here is some nice inefficiency at play. The confusion about entrances, there are 6 normal entrances is a bit stupid. All of these go pretty much straight to the parking facilities below the towers. The building they were going to is accesible above ground from one other entrance. But, the kicker is. Around the fence in our community, are fire access roads, padlocked gates where the parks people have not planted trees etc.
Why does the fire services not have schematics of large compounds in the city. Why does the community people not send out their fleet of golf vehicles to direct or assist the fire department in finding the way. Why does all other motorists, pedestrians etc. do their best in making it difficult for the firetrucks to get around. Why does the firetruck drivers seem hihcly unskilled in manouvering their vehicles.
Amateurs. We are all doomed.
