There was a guy who ran a shanzai gzstuff-style website in a city between Guangzhou and Zhuhai who was fired from at least 4 or 5 schools in that small city. A violent alcoholic sociopath with a dunning-kruger issues who preferred lower middle school or primary students. Tie me kangaroo down sport.

Rumours circulated as to the exact reasons for this record setting run of burned bridges. The person in question would never confirm nor deny any conjecture. Finally, the entry/exit bureau refused to renew his visa. Children were said to have been seen to be dancing in the playgrounds following his departure from China.

I know 1 guy who's been fired multiple times from his various employers around China.

Now, his English is pretty damn good! And, other than accent, you wouldn't pick him as a NNS of English - bar the occasional mis-appropriacy on an idiom - or lack of knowledge of one (but hey - we all do!) His knowledge of grammar is better than most.

His problem is simple - he doesn't tolerate the idiotic BS that accompanies working in Chinese language mills, and therefore makes people look incompetent (well, ok - they ARE incompetent - he just makes it obvious to everyone else). In not caring about their face, he makes himself a prime target for their angst and revenge - which is obviously to get him fired!

e_mcdonald:

yeah that's not a good move. Best thing to do is get along with everybody we work with. We are in their country after all, we have to respect their culture especially because it is an ancient culture that they are proud of.

I've heard of one and worked with another. It is almost  impossible to get fired because of the cost and losses the school will suffer. Most will just not renew your contract which is done for something as simple as punishing students for cheating.

Your behavior must be extreme in order to be fired. I've worked with many teachers who I personally would have fired on numerous occasions.

I just remembered another guy who's been fired - I think a couple of times. I'm not sure, because from what I hear, it's the same sort of reasons I don't know - being incredibly unreliable! We'd organise to meet somewhere, and he'd be all "yeah, sure - I'll be there". Even once, someone spoke to him 30 mins before meet-up time, and he's on his way... and then nothing! Happened regularly. Regularly enough that when we started making plans expecting him not to show - it worked!

I know another American (the guy above is as well), who was also worried about being fired. I think for similar reasons, though he has also confessed to suffering from 'illness' to miss shifts - self-induced illness.

TBH - I think too many schools put up with this sort of crap! And thus, give the good teachers a really bad name. So bad, that for some, it's even hard to get a visa now. One guy I know has been teaching for about 20 years - his degree was as a maths teacher, and he'd been doing that for about a decade before moving to China. I'm not sure in all the years I've seen him around here I've ever seen him drunk! Perhaps slightly tipsy. He can be unreliable on occasions, however for the most part, a VERY upstanding member of the community. And now, he's got visa issues...

I've heard of some of the things other teachers have done - and again, so not ok back home (granted, so are some of the students and their behaviour). While China maybe was to blame some years ago, when they started letting backpackers 'teach' English, it certainly is now by not enforcing the laws they put in place - and for not having more stringent ones!!!

I know of one. He refused to follow the curriculum, tried teaching about Christianity, and was trying to sleep with his students.
