Q: Have things really changed in China in attitudes towards foreigners?

There's a lot of change: job opportunities are gone, English reform is taking over education, the smog is pushing out longtime expats... there's even a news article in Global Times that states the above question as "fact".

And yet, the same things still occur. Foreigners are still used in advertisements to spice things up as "classy". Foreigners still just do what they want because they remain outside the confines of Chinese morality.

There has been a change, but is there now a shift?

i would disagree about foreigners doing what they want because they are 'outside the confines of Chinese morality'. Most foreigners i have met here are well-behaved and respectful of the locals. It is true we are treated differently, but that is not of our chosing.

many of the long-term ex-pats will probably leave because of the things you outline above, but many more will still come for the experience of living and working here. It will be the attitude of the local people that will determine the numbers who continue to come here.
