My common question about my country when I ask them is 'Have you ever been to the states before"? I usually don't ask if they like it or not. Although one girl I worked with did flat out tell me she didn't like America. I think the build up was that she was telling me that she wanted to travel then I asked her has she been to the states and then she just told me she didn't like it.

I recently asked a guy if he's been to the states and he said no. Not sure if he liked the states or not but he did tell me he had 2 girls from the states tutoring him so I thought he liked it since he picked an american to tutor him.

My question is if they didn't like it why didn't they like it have they ever said so? The girl that didn't like the states said something about we leave countries in a poor state or something....

ohChina:

I'm sorry if their improper speech hurt you feelings or something like that.

People can dislike America for many reasons. That's another topic, maybe globally.

As Chinese I did have heard about a stereotype that many Chinese girls think Americans coming to live in China were in a poor financial status back in the US, unable to find girlfriends....etc.  I personally heard it once eating in a campus restaurant.

Stereotypes can be ridiculous because every individual is very different. But as said, those "poor states" Americans are clearly not the girls' target.

I can hear it now, "Do you like China?" Ridiculous question asked for the sole purpose of getting the desired positive response. Insecurity reigns supreme.

Never asked anyone, no, but I can gather from what people have offered that England is considered as a land eternally shrouded in fog, and the English are all umbrella twirling gentlemen who spend their time playing football in it.

Umm... isn't that true?

As an American I can confirm all of the above. They're all queen worshippers, too.

No one knows anything about Denmark except for Hans Christian Andersen and Danish butter cookies, so I take it they have no opinion about my home country.

cooter:

I dunno.  I know a lot of Chinese that like to shop at Jack Jones.  That's Danish, right?

Usually they think America is full of bad ass guys and hot girls because of movies they watch. I have been told this many times, they want to go, but them and their parents are afraid of getting shot by bad Americans....-_-

It's a good point of view your question. Actually I've never happened to be inspired to asking this question. Unless is about China, I realized how ignorant people are about other Countries that I stopped saying where my home country is. When they ask me "where are you from?", even if I tell them, I am facing a sort of Chinese "awe"-some reaction, I check whether they heard or not about it then get confirmed they have no clue. Now, when asked again, I simply say: "I'm from Europe". I get the same "awe"-some reaction then I ask: "have you ever heard about this country? it's in Siberia!!!!!!" Then they feel like they've learnt something knew.

Next time I will ask your question and will let you know about their answer.

ohChina:

Sorry for messing them up.the first time. Serbia and Siberia look so similar....

Yeah, sometimes. I knew a lot of Chinese people in America, and we talked about XYZ. I usually asked them if they "like it here..." always got a "yes," with the occasional, "but I miss home."

crimochina:

i guess growing up around immigrants i never thought to ask that question.
