Q: Have you ever not paid a taxi and just ran away ?

I can't even begin to count the number of times where I know the exact directions to get to where I want to go and the taxi driver ends up going another route that is longer or starts driving in small circles or going the wrong way for a short period of time to rack up the price.

The amount of arguements I've gotten into with taxi drivers for doing this is pretty absurd. Soemtimes I win and end up not paying the extra money. Sometimes it's just not worth the hassle and the extra money is small enough that I just pay it to not waste my time.

However,  I've never actually ran away from a taxi. I've thought about it hundreds of times though when I know I'm getting screwed over.  I start planning my exit route and how I can quickly get away.  I never end up getting the courage to do it though.

So my question is, have you or any one you know ran away from a taxi and not paid.  If so did they chase you? Were you able to out run them? Did you get caught ?  Do share.

I  like and feel sorry for (most) taxi drivers I've met here. Also, I haven't really had any problems with them (in Beijing). They are far from the people I'd want to screw out of money. But I guess it sounds like you've encountered less virtuous drivers in your time here so I cannot say.

On a semi-related note, wasn't there an African guy that was beaten to death by a group of black cab drivers after he tried to run away without paying last summer?

SoFresh:

I have to agree, most taxi drivers I've met are very nice and honest. I've had some really good conversations with them plenty of times.  I also feel a bit bad for them because it's getting harder and harder for them to make a profit and most of them work pretty damn hard.

But yeah I guess I've just had more bad luck than you.  I've been taken advantage of quite a bit though.  Usually with taxi drivers going the wrong way to make the trip longer and rack up the price.  I never noticed it until I really learned the streets of beijing very well.

Just once, in Yiwu, the ride should cost about 8rmb and he asking for 30. he get me in on his way with other people inside already. its common practice there. i gave him his 10 rmb, fight a bit and than i walk away, he did not chase me Smile

I never ran away from nobody....even if I did run I always stopped! I did short change a cab driver once because I only had big bills. THis was in the morning time. THe guy didn't have enough money so I ended up paying less.

when i realize i'm being screwed by a taxi driver. i let them know that i know. then i wait until we get near my destination then i demand he stop the car. then i give him what i know it would cost. but i ball it up into little balls and throw each bill at him.

I get out my phone and take a picture of their ID card in the dashboard. They always try to stop you, and you always pay the correct price. Sometimes they let you go for free.

I always inspect 50+ bills and, when the taxi driver gives me counterfeit money, they almost always yell at me to get out of the car quickly. I stand my ground and wait for actual currency, and that pisses them off quite a bit.

To the cheating taxi drivers who are always outside airports and train stations, and who demand a set price instead of the actual cost, I always take a picture of their license plate numbers and threaten to send them to their bosses. The looks on their faces... lol.

I have paid less than they asked when 'off meter'.  That is the only thing I have ever done.  Like they want 50 for a 30 ride, when we arrive, I give them 35 or 40, they act a bit shocked, but they don't flip out. Fair for both of us I think, and easier than making a big scene about it.
