Q: Have you ever ordered "random fried stuff" at a Chinese restaurant?

I ate at a common Chinese restaurant by the Lama Temple over the weekend with a friend who lives in the area.

We ordered a dish called "Chao Suibian" from the menu, which literally means "random fried stuff" I think.

The dish was just a mishmash of a bunch of things like tofu strips, nice noodles, cabbage among others. It was really good, but it's the name that interests me more. It's one of the first real instances of this kind of humor I've seen in China. I've since asked a few of my Chinese friends about this dish, and none of them claim to have ever heard of it before. My question is, is it common for Chinese restaurants to "invent" their own dishes or give them funny names?

I've seen this an awful lot too - the creative, almost nonsensical names for Chinese dishes. I recently saw a pancake like dish called 狗尿饼 literally meaning "Dog Piss Pancake." Lovely.
