I keep seeing adverts for all these colourful RPG games where you apparently take a dynasty warrior through this fantasy world and level up etc. I've also seen kids and adults play all kinds of online games that look like nothing I've seen released in the west. I did see one shop owner playing Red Alert 2 once, and I am under the impression World of Warcraft is popular here though I'm interested to find out about these other games (as well as apprehensive as I don't want my computer to be full of viruses)

I see them all the time too. They're nothing special from what I can tell. The majority fall into 3 categories. The first is a side scrolling game similar to Streets of Rage. The second is like a 2D overhead game sort of like a really low level Diablo. And the third seem to be some random copy of WoW. I havn't played any but whenever I'm in an internet cafe I see people playing. Oh, and just like the TV shows, they're all set in some random dynasty.
Yeah, I played some QQ games for a bit.
In one game, it seemed like the entire thing was based around beating up old people and women. Lots of women. I guess it was some kind of elderly and wife-beating simulator? I think it was called 热血龙族 or something. Game sucked, and wanted money, so I quit.
I play WoW, but on U.S. servers.
Browser games are just Facebook games or really basic RPGs set in ancient China. Nothing to see.
As of actual video games, yeah, World of Warcraft is a huge hit in China. Then there's DotA, Counter-Strike, Diablo etc
And when it comes to Chinese video games... it's usually WoW, DotA and League of Legends ripoffs, that take place - you guessed it - in ancient China, with mythical characters. Yep. Take a game, give it a paint job, slap a Chinese face on the characters, and BAM, you're a creative genius.
As of first person shooters: Counter-strike or TF2 ripoffs (without the blood, because shooting a person in the face is obviously not violent if there's nothing that comes out).
There also were those casual games a few years ago, like the 3 on 3 basketball, and that dancing game that made people smash the space bar with all their might to complete their combo (Seriously, if you found a space bar that wasn't broken in an internet cafe 4-5 years ago, kudos)
In other words, "Chinese" video games just make you wish you were playing the real thing, rather than a glitchy game where you not only HAVE to pay to win, but also where intelligent design has been removed in an attempt to not make it look like a ripoff.
No can't get past the instructions to get started and play the game. I usually go to a game place and play arcade games. At least that way if I don't know anything then oh well still won't be of much help, but still I play games at the arcade. Don't know if you consider those chinese games or not!
I play quite a bit of CrossFire (CF) . I know that's really popular in China, I've seen a lot of people playing it.
Once I walked into a store and saw a kid who couldn't have been older than 3 years old playing that game. He's probably one of the guys that headshots me like 20 times a game lol.
i play sanguosha (三国杀). It is actually a card game, but they also have a web-version of it. Lots of fun.
