Q: Have you ever seen a physical brawl between two foreigners?

Have you ever seen a physical brawl between two foreigners here in China?  What started it?  Was drinking involved?  How did it end?  Were the police called?

Yep, and they're mates. They were just letting off steam really, I think, but it looked impressive.

Seen one? I've been in one. Some drunk a-hole picking on an old man at a bar. Me and another guy both grabbed him at the same time and threw him across the bar, then out the door.

You know, where we're from we stick up for the elderly.

981977405:

I agree...where you are from, you stick up for the elderly and abuse everyone else. Good post in any case but I kind of knew that you are like this.

Yes, our child welfare services, free medical, legal aid, EI programs, free quality education, milk subsidies for kids, pension plan, student loan system and post secondary subsidies all combined with our welfare programs for the unfortunate and elections to give everyone a say prove that we don't take care of anyone in my country and screw EVERYONE over and abuse them....oh, and how many such programs does China have?

Western couple was dating a mixed couple (western man and chinese girl). The westrn wife made a few snide remarks about the other guy dating a girl 15 years younger than him ( she is 28 he is 43) so he finally tells the western wife to "go to hell". Western husband got angry, drinks were splashed and the fight began. The waiter and I managed to separate them, the police came and the shop owner told the police that everything was ok, and that they were just "playing".  The cop wasnt fooled but he let it drop after a while.
When the cop left and the bartender found out what the fight was about, he told the western lady that she was n o longer welcome here in the bar because she "insulted chinese girls".

Was this in Guilin? My God, the lady is lucked that the cop didn't haul her away. Thanks for the answer.

Yes, this was in Guilin. The officer never found out what was the cause of the brawl, since he was told that they were just "plaing rough". The one who did find out was the owner.

I have never seen a "brawl" between people other than Chinese while living here.

Now for those of you elitest, China loving  fake posters (and you know who you are)....read my following story and then tell me I was wrong or right with my actions,.

Yesterday I was waiting at a taxi stand with my wife and her mom. It was freezing cold! and yes, they are Chinese. My wife was next in line and her mom was immediately behind her, they both got to the cab but a girl and two other people jumped in front of me. I had considerable luggage and was unable to get round the Chinese people who butted in line ahead of me. I was kinda ok with waiting for them to move aside so I could join my family in the cab. However, they would not move and I was trapped by the barriers keeping everyone in queue - I'm not a violent guy and didn't want to push them outta the way. My wife however is a little more testy. She got outta the cab and was telling the people in front of me to get outta the way and let me thru. True to Chinese form, they started to push eachother and a fight ensued. I hurdled the rail and grabbed my wife and tried to shield her from the clawing  from the girl and what seemed to be another woman.  Hard to say exactly was happening at that time but they were going at it. From there I felt a smack in the back of my head. I turned around, wife still in my arm to see a guy, about 50, wielding a bag of something. I cursed him and continued to try to get my wife in the cab. At this point her mom, jumped outta the cab to fight the 2nd woman. My wife was knocked to the ground and the man....now get THIS......KICKED HER IN THE RIBS!!!!! Sorry guys but at that time all fuckin bets are off and I lunged and delivered what simply, in my lifetime was the hardest punch in the face that I could deliver. I am 230lbs and have played hockey my entire life. The guy went down and stayed there til the cops came. I took my family and put them in the cab. Was this necessary? Did it have to happen? Would it happen between foriegners? Not on your life! All is well now and the cops let us go as the taxi driver confirmed the incident. The police apologized to me and wished us a Happy New Year.

Sure I went a little off topic here, but I know that there is a large group of posters here  that would have done what I did yesterday. Yes I was scared that fighting in China could have put me in a world of hurt. It's not something I would have ever do on my own. But even the most calm people can only be pushed so far. Sadly however, I think a few of you would have let it happen and tried to justify the actions of a few Chinese people that couldn't be courteous, even at this time of year.

And yes, I was sober then and I am sober now. So don't post crap to that effect.

981977405:

How can anyone not react to an event like this? Someone clobbers you; someone clobbers your wife; someone clobbers your mother-in-law, all over a taxi? You told me that you are in Heilongjiang, I think, and that kind of confirms what I witnessed about the aggressiveness of the man-on-the-street. I feel bad for you, truly I do, and even worse for the women. At least the taxi driver was honest enough to tell the police the truth, Derek, as I have seen just the opposite happen and everyone lie and then the poor foreigner was taken to jail.

Wow! I do not see what else you could have done, especially when they attacked your family. I am not sure if this would not have happened among westerners (after all, it is a big world) but family comes first. Well done.

You would have been within your rights to do more than one punch him. Too bad you didn't have the time to boot him in the face. A broken jaw usually teaches a lesson.

And I got two "thumbs down"...trolls!

981977405:

Who knows, you may get more, maybe some of the Chinese readers on this site won't be pleased to read of what happened, I mean a foreigner and Chinese papa in a fistfight. Violence only begets more violence and bullying only begets more bullying, IMHO.

They may be upset that I retaliated and decked him or that my wife was attacked by a man? Choose your words wisely now.

I certainly hope that the thumbs down are due to the fact that your wife and mum-in-law were attacked. Similarly, I hope your wife is okay now.
