Q: Have you ever spent a whole day exploring a 2nd or lower tier city? What did you find?

We're talking about dawn to dusk exploring. It  can be 2nd, 3rd, 4th tier, by yourself or with friends? What did you find most abundant, least? What did you find most interesting and where can you spend most of your time? Would you repeat it again many times?

Most abundant?  Xenophobia.

What was interesting?  How a "city" so close to Suzhou, Shanghai, and Nanjing can be full of so many backwards, rude, and xenophobic people.

Have done lot of travelling (not exploring) in 2nd/3rd/4th tier cities over the years. One common thing seen everywhere is the construction activity. All are developing infrastructure rapidly and nicely.

BHGAL:

here in my town we have a monstrous sports arena... maybe 8-10 years old....  we have no football team and the stadium is pretty much a piece of junk... car show once or twice a year.

they are building a new one...  it is flipping massive... not just a sports stadium, there is an opera house, a museum and a library ....  massive construction project nearing completion...  seriously doubt that any of the locals give a shit...  it looks good today!  update in 5 years.

what tier is my hometown? zhanjiang, guangdong ...how do you know? is there a list somewhere?

I had just arrived in this 3rd/4th tier city and went exploring and stumbled on a market that sold veggies meat and fish. It' s just like a market you would see anywhere else in China. What was so memorable for me that this was the first time I had ever seen dogs skinned and chopped into neat little piles of body parts. Some dogs were hanging on meat hooks and looked to me like they were fresh kills. I understand about different cultures and the like but it was shock that first time.

I often explore the urban villages around where I live. I head off on the ebike with the daughter, asking her what way to go. These villages are like rabbit warrens.

We sometimes strike gold. For example, a few months ago we found a pet shop hidden away up an alley. We had just been given an empty 4' fish tank by a relative, so now it is fully planted with lots of happy goldfish for her to feed Smile

This was after months of me asking the wife where the pet shops were. Now she wonders why I know my way around better than she does.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
