Q: Have you found that chinese find in someway ok to have rats inside their homes?

They seem to not care and seems like they ignore the nasty places rats usually live in or the diseases they can transmit.

Cleanliness & hygiene are an utopia when you realize how they deal when they have a rat inside home.

Any experiences, comments or suggestions?

I completely disagree and don't know what kind of under-developed little village you're living in. The Chinese homes I've been in were spotless and even put my mother's cleaning obsession to shame. Most Chinese (I'm talking about the ones who live in cities any way), are very aware of pollution and germs and try very hard to keep their homes clean. This means taking off shoes when entering the home, having easy-to-clean floor tiles all over the flat which are mopped regularly, using bleach and other cleaning agents. In some homes, it's next to impossible to get rid of cockroaches and other small insects, but no middle class family would even for a second, tolerate having a rat in their homes.

Scandinavian:

I think people are obsessed with clean floors and that is about it, there can be mold growing on the walls. Kitchen hygiene leaves a lot to be desired, and certainly shows that there is no comprehension of bacteria. .... Let me touch that raw chicken some more before I go through all items in the closets without washing my hands. I am continuously impressed with how robust humans are, that survival in China is even possible.

The exception to the clean floors theory is that people often empty their tea cups onto the floor tiles, not caring that it leaves spots.

I do think people would no accept rats in their houses. And then again, their throw garbage everywhere outside, we certainly have some pretty big rats in our hood. They live like emperors here.

Seems like Scandinavian has more idea of what most of chinese costumes are like. Sure I'm not saying all of them but I'm really surprised what I found in some chinese people's home and their reactions of a positive confirmation there is a rat inside their home.

Is not only one case, is some cases and they all happened in Shanghai.

The fact that some people wear everyday clean or even new clothes, antiperspirant & cologne means they are clean?

No idea what you're talking about with the rats, but I have gotten used to cockroaches now. It used to be that i'd jump on a chair, stand on one leg, clutch my cheeks and scream if I saw one; now I just throw them a crust of my sandwich and go back to bed.

morocotopo:

Right, roaches are kind of normal and easier to reach everywhere. I was one curious about the rumor they can stand nuclear radiation and microwaves. So I got a disposable plastic recipient and put a roach in the microwave, full power for 5 mins. She seemed to enjoy it. Finally didn't happen anything so I released it so it could go and tell the story to its buddies.

roaches are crafty, conniving, revengeful, dirty, motivated little bastards. And they can 'talk' too, or communicate in roachunghua, or whatever u call it.  We used to sit outside the bar at nite in Ermita (Manila) and smush the big fuckers when they got too close,,,,, well,  if u smoosh one,, wait about 2-3 minutes and a dozen of them bastards will come flying at you !  buzzing you like Luftwaffe fighters during the Blitzkrieg !!  they are smart and vengeful!  I swear they would even send the babies to spy on us and report back on our defenses.  I say this because u might not see a big one for some time,,, but u look up and the little babies come creeping outta the sewer (which is a euphemism for ermita),,,  I guarantee they were sent to gather intelligence!  then few minutes after a few babies escape,,, bam !  Blitzkrieg !   oh yeah,, until u seen a 2+ inch Manila Flying Roach, u aint seen a roach !

My first Chinese girlfriend grew up with rats. They bit her, and shit like that.

My second Chinese girlfriend also grew up with rats. They bit her, and shit like that.

My wife grew  up with rats, too. They also bit her, and shit like that.

I think my wife gave me rabies.

TMC was established before the bubonic plague, and the discovery of micro biology. Therefore it does not take into account  any of these things. Also TMC uses feces of animals in their concoctions. So people are completely in the dark when it comes to these things.

And yes, these places do exist. Most places I've been to were rat free. But there are places that are infested (I once stayed at a complex near little London in Guangzhou)

diverdude1:

my 2nd tier (being generous) Hunan city is swarming with the bastards too....  go down any side street at night and they are living in/on the rubbish piles. I guess that is to be expected though. Joke up in Zhejiang was that the lamb bbq sticks at night were rat,,,, might notta been a joke though...  :-p
