So I am minding my own business in the office and one of the bosses is having an arguement on the phone with another teacher.
The new school is issuing parking stickers for E bikes and cars for security to verify for entry.
The teacher got a parking sticker with the number "94", and apparently in Mandarin this phrase with a different tone means "about to die".
The teacher that got 94 is older and believed it was bad luck and accused the boss of giving them the number on purpose.
So she went to a higher boss to get the number changed and nobody will get the number 94.
I have a phone number with 4 "8's" and everybody tells me I'm lucky.
The boss asked the teacher who got 94 if she knew who got 6 or 8 since they are now millionaires, she wanted to borrow some money from them, then the argument started all over again for another hour.
I remember getting a room in a hotel once and the room number was 406 or something like that - 4 being the 4th floor and the following number being the room...
So I'm walking up the stairs watching the signs to tell me what floor I'm on.. 1, 2, 3, 3a , 5... WTF, I must have zoned out and missed the 4th floor, turn around and start walking back down.. 5, 3a, 3... shit, zoned out again, this is what happens when you get drunk with your mates before you check in to the hotel.
Yeah 4 is bad luck in China so you can't have a 4th floor. It's 3a. It took me a few backtracks before I remembered that.

The apartment i bought here is: Building 4, 4th floor, apartment 4. I got a 20 percent discount because no one wanted to even have a look at it. Oh, and the value has gone up 400 percent in 4 years. The best thing is my (very) traditional Cantonese MIL refuses to visit. I guess you could say that 4 is my lucky number.

In the apartment complex (2 buildings) I lived last year in Guizhou, both buildings didn't have 4th floor. Just, 1st, 2nd, 3rd and next was 5th ... and on the each floor there were 5 or 6 apartments with numbers 1& 2 & 3 & 3a & 5 ... LOL
The thingy is, if they mark apartment with no. 4, they must sell it cheaper ... as Wolf got it ... In West, Wolf would get 20% price discount only if builders would forgot to build WC inside the apartment ...LOLOLO
Value of your 'everything no. 4 apartment' has appreciated steadily, buTT .. you'll most likely experience troubles at selling of your 'faulty' apartment, he he. I think, future buyer of your apartment must be laowai. Non-religious laowai ...
You know, I understand that certain no. is 'unlucky and what not' among the people, but housing complex builders are Gov. firms ...????
chatting w/ girl today and I showed her some shrimp meal I had had down on Palawan a while back and she said it looked delicious and blah, blah, blah,,, typical convo,,,, then I get a '666',,, so, I went 666? what's that and she said it meant it's what you send when something is really great or impressive or cool or what-have-you....
I was trying to decide if to tell her it's symbolism in the West... found I was too lazy to try to tell her about all that stuff,,, so, I just said,,, cool. so, now I know a new one,,,,,, 666.

yeah,,, or something one of the 'hip' kids picked up from some American horror movie ~
Jean.P:
666 is a play on Chinese words, not English. This expression has been around for many years, and its use is popular on the Internet. liu (六, 6) sounds like liu (溜, slick, smooth), but the tones are not the same. Why are there three 6s? It has nothing to do with a devil or Satan. It's used to identify the communication as a slang phrase, not to be confused as a specific quantity of something. Diver explained the meaning correctly. There are many other examples of numbers used to convey Chinese slang. Such as 250 means "idiot, moron". And 520 means "I love you". These are based on the numbers having similar sounding syllables to expressions, like the number 4 in Chinese sounds like the word for "to die".
Why are the people who got a 6 or 8 now millionaires?
