Q: Have you had friends come and visit you in China?

Whenever I am back home my friends and family ask me why the hell am I in China. They don't really understand. I always respond by telling them to come and visit to see for themselves why I love it so much. So far my parents have come and two of my friends and they loved it and want to visit again.

Any of you had friends come to visit China for the first time? Did they enjoy it?

my family came to see me during the national holiday week in October last year.

it was not their first visit to China, but it was the first time they were not on a scheduled organised tour. I had a local friend who accompanied us as guide so everyone had a very good time.

They got a sense of what life is like as a foreign worker in China.

I had a close friend come but he was on a short business trip so we met up for a weekend. My mom and little bro both came seperatly but i had to buy their tickets so im not sure any of those count.

My mom loved it, my brother..... not so much. He didnt mind relaxing in sanya but everything else... he straight up thinks im an idiot for living here. But then again hes not the travelling type, so different stroks for different folks i guess

brother1818:

I hear what you're saying. I have traveled a fair bit in my life and my brother has hardly traveled at all. He went to Thailand last year with his wife and he hated the food and ended up eating western food (McD's, BK etc). I mean, who hates Thai food, it's so good. So ya, siblings who are very different is what I'm getting at. After Thailand I don't think he'll ever visit me in China...

Scandinavian:

heh, if you can't eat the food in Thailand, China will be a big challenge. But then again, there is a lot of different ways of cooking a pig. I would be surprised if there wouldn't be a variant that fits your brother, brother1818

My bro came to visit me in China, and we went for a month-long road trip in Sichuan. We had a blast. My parents also came, touring Yunnan with a small group. They also had a great time. In both case, it was in deep countryside, with the toilets from Hell and all those things, but they just had good memories to bring back home.

I think China, as a travel trip, is great. You got all the good sides, and you don't stay long enough to be bothered (or even notice) by the bad sides. I remember, around 2006 and then 2009, traveling in China, and telling myself that living there sounded like a great idea. And there I'm, ranting here ^^

I've had both my parents and some friends come visit.

My friends didn't spend that long time in my town, but traveled around first, then came to my town. My parents didn't actually see anything else than my town, which is really boring. They did however get to see a side of China that is off limits to normal tourist, and my mother in law and one of her funny friends took them around to lots of, for us living here mundane things, but people who have never been outside of Europe, pretty special places.

One of my friends had spent days walking around Beijing before coming here. We took him to get a foot massage as the first thing. Poor massage woman ....

I've told all my friends they are welcome to come visit us, but we may not be able to go to see the "usual" attractions with them due to vacation restrictions etc. but will help them plan and execute.

I am presently working on my sister + her family visiting us. The logistics is a bit harder as they would be 4 people.

I've had a similar experience to Scando.  Friends traveled around before spending a couple days in my city, while family parked it the whole time in my city and didn't see anything else.  Whose experience was more authentic?  Hard to say.  I must say that it was nice to let my mother see the imported food store.  While the prices are high, it got her off my back.  I CAN buy a few(not all) things here.  "Hey mom, no need to send bacon through the mail!"
