I just want to ask, Have you been teaching in Qiqihaer, Heilongjiang. I am thinking of teaching there but i don,t wanna feel lonely every day, no foreigners at all, or not even a place to drink a beer or something, I have heard it is very near from Daqing. Thank you guys
yea, i live in daqing, along with a few others on this website. qiqihaer is a pretty good sized city. there are some foreigners there, they mostly work at private schools. one of the foreigners comes to daqing every weekend to work part time at a school here. by train, maybe 2 hours from daqing, 4 hours from harbin. i can't speak to much for qiqihaer since i only visit there, don't live there. daqing has a few expat bars, and a few nice chinese bars (the tibet bar). compared with daqing, qiqihaer is a bit poor (we're an oil city). qiqihaer is famous for its BBQ and huge nature reserve. the city is surronded by wetlands. it's interesting up here, i'm sure you can find some nice things to keep you busy. what school are you looking at?
Not a lot happening in Qiqihaer. Daqing has a very strong expat community and we get together every Sunday night either at the Orange Bar in Ranghulu or Kingsleys Bar in Daqing. We have the Foreigner Olympics and a number of other organised events. There are approximately 50 or so teachers here.
if you want a night here let us know. Good luck. Oh and bring your long underwear. Effin' freezing!!
Bloody cold up there. Freezing most of the year. Rather primitive. You can do a lot better than that.
In any cases the oil revenues in Daqing are shrinking rapidly because the reserves are being depleted.
They had riots there a few years back. A rare occurrence on the really violent scale on which it happened.
Try Harbin. It's still easy to get a job there.
I lived in Harbin for 5.5 years and now I am in Daqing for the past 2.5 years. These two cities are like night and day. Harbin, while busier, with better shopping and restaurants and having more expats is clearly too crowded and hectic for my liking. Daqing is spread out but 100% cleaner and has nice fresh air most of the time. Both are cold but bearable to this Canadian. Shopping is ample and the expat community is welcoming here.
Qiqihaer is not a place I am able to comment on at all.
