Q: Have you made long-lasting friendships with other foreigners in China?

Please don't misinterpret this question. I put a special emphasis on "long-lasting" as many people in the big cities like Beijing or Shanghai have a wide network of foreign friends. However, there are different levels of friendship and the majority of newly made friendships among foreigners - in my opinion anyway - are not true long-lasting friendships but ones forged out of convenience and other motifs. I have dozens of friends but only one true long-lasting friend who I know will still be in my life in 20 years when I'm living on a tropical island somewhere.

No. In my opinion, if you are not living in a 1st or 2nd tier city the expat community is just too small and people are constantly coming and leaving. It's hard to cement a relationship like that...

Also, it might have just been me, but I was kind of unlucky... every city I have been to, the expat community is almost the same... 2-3 British women (from Scotland or Ireland) in their mid 30's and with drinking problems (and wearing Liverpool FC shirts... for some reason), and a couple of guys from Britain that the only thing they are capable of doing is make noise and drink beer. I just avoid them... I would be embarrassed if someone saw me hanging out with them.

A: Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever
A:Chinese are generally pretty tolerant friendly and accepting whatever foreigners do.  I spent 15 years in China but I wouldn't say there are that many don'ts....Don't assume that many people speak English though and learn some Chinese. Don't speak much about politics unless you want to praise Chinese system.  -- Natalie363
