Q: Have you met any chinese who knows Kung Fu?

I was surprised when I realized that learning martial arts is more common in Europe than in China. From my experience, learning Kung Fu is regarded as something for poor people with no means (or for actors, of course)

Is that true?

There is a Wushu club at my previous uni. They sure knew what they were doing. My current uni is too small for many clubs.

Yes, had a few lessons as well.

At the local unis, there's been clubs for WuShu, TaiJi, and TaeKwonDo (wth the latter being the more popular).

SO far I haven't. I've met people that have taken Taichi or practiced this, but not Kung Fu.

Aside from old people doing fake tai chi in awkward places in public I haven't met anyone who could claim to be proficient in Kung fu. I honestly have my doubts that it could be effective when facing a trained opponent anyway. See the UFC example in which a Chinese shaolin master was ko'd within just a few minutes.

I have seen some kung fu demonstration in Hong Kong. Here I had not such chance. This is like the Chinese food. We hear and appreciate it much more back in our Western world, but here you can't get a decent Chinese dish, an authentic one, that it opens your senses of an exotic and creative experience as I had in Europe. Here you only eat whatever you get at a restaurant and only think to survive in case of any poisonous food you may get served. Or simply you don't go anymore from bad experiences you had at a restaurant.

In Hong Kong the martial arts might be of higher interest to the locals because of Bruce Lee. It's just a thought.
