Q: Have you met anyone who's gone to jail in China?

even for just a night public disorder, drunkenly hitting someone or whatever.

I know several.  The longest was in jail for 2 years here.  The shortest was for about 4 hours.

Charges ranged from drunk driving to bar fights to vehicular assault to over staying a visa.

Know a guy who was given the option of 20,000 kuai or 20 days in the hooscao for driving without a license. He took the time. Said he just read all day and it was okay.

i have spent time at police station for a day. About a month ago I really had bad times in China (there were some posts during that time about those issues which led me to alcohol consumption). In two years in China never had been to club more than once (one only with my ex-gf on her birthday). So one friday night, after badminton game I decided to go out on my own (Influence of Obama's speeck!!! "Yes I can do things in China on my own. I don't need fucking help from anyone!!!!) I ended up in a Club. Then ended up drinking alcohol of different sorts...then at around 4 am, followed by black out not being able to navigate myself to my home. Police took me to the station. Well I was not kept behind the bars. One police officer who could speak English very well asked many questions including the reason for drinking. Then he told me to be careful next time and not to drink "with strangers" and not go out alone while having difficult times. Well he lectured a little bit that "I was not suppose to use computer at police station, write anything, instead just to remain calm (I tried to use use my laptop and write something). He told me to pay 200 RMB fine and leave the station. I guess he was off duty after that. But, other police didn't let me go. Whenver I asked question, they just told me to wait for a while. Bammm then one police told me that I have to pay 2000 RMB to him as I tried to fight with him. Me and my prof. checked the video but there was no such things as fighting. Rather, there was another girl also in the police station beside me. She was screaming and shouting all the time. It seemed that her behavior irritated me and I just hurled the name plate from the table. But seemed that they were not ready to let me go untill I pay 2000 RMB. Then I started to get worried. In the evening the police who had told me to pay 200 RMB and leave called again. Probably, he asked about me also to his colleagues. I talked with him as he was surprised seeing me at the station for so long. I told him that he should talk with his colleagues as they were demanding 2000 rmb. Then they let me go without paying. I could clearly see that those fuckers who demanded money were not happy with me. They gave the receipt for 200 RMB to be paid via bank. Next day my institute paid that fine for me and told me not to go out alone again as I don't understand chinese. Even if I go I should write down the address of my home and institute clearly in Chinese.

It was mixed experience for me. I have never been such drunk. Never encountered police before that moment, nowhere in the world (Well who knows when the bad day occurs!). As I was kept in their office, they were offering me cigarettes whenever they were smoking.

It was a wakeup call for me to control my loneliness and not to suppress my feelings or bad time with alcohol. From that day, I am kind of enlighten with no desire of alcohol (well as prof. insists me to forget about the black day as we all face once in a while in their lifetime and just enjoy life hoping for better, I drink only during group dinner). I don't feel depressed or lonely as before even I am alone. Somehow just learned how to be happy with focusing on positive elements of my time (Buddha called it to be mindful of every actions and let the feelings to flow without suppressing it so that we could be able to nurture the positive things. A way to remain happy!)

From that moment, I realized I can be happy and remain calm even in absence of anyone.

Sometimes I read posts of other expats about  depression and frustration in China and how the alcohol consumption rocketed after coming to China. I found myself in same situation. Once I even got worried that I am becoming alcoholic.  The more I read about similar situation, the more I drank and tried to vent my frustration. But that was not the solution as I understand now.

Gosh! I thank god (I am not sure if he exists or not) or my consciousness that the specific night made me to realize that I was killing myself with my own actions. I learned to love and respect myself before I do it to others. (Well I was always reading buddha's teachings before. But after that night, I realized I just read it but didn't truly understand it. Now I am seeing and feeling what he really wanted to say.)

Hakupatasa:

No I was not drunk....in fact i kinda quit drinking...i wanted to vent that moment through words and tried many times to write it down.

well you can presume that I was virtually drunk almost every day after that incident and hunting like "The Dark Knight Rises." So to say when started to write it down, I was carried away with every words and more i wrote, lighter I felt.

Thanks for reading......

Yes several. In most cases it was for crashing unlicensed motorbikesAND  being drunk at the same time. The most they got was 15 days. Recently I met a guy who paid a few thousand kuai to the police officer and was released the next day.
