Saw an annoying nut job on the subway today who was screaming about jesus and god, and how Obama is protestant so we should follow his faith too etc. That was the first time I saw a Chinese person preaching in public here. Have any of you witnessed anything similar?
Interesting. I once did a face job for a hotel in south China which saw me involved in a Christmas event - I had to stand and sing Christmas carols with this group of girls who were wearing bunny ears (I think they got their festivals mixed up). Afterwards, an elderly woman dressed in cardinal-esque robes arrived on the scene and read a prayer from the bible while we were all asked to arc our hands to the sky. Weird, though I got my 500 RMB and free buffet.
When my wife was hospitalized, a priest and his wife showed up one morning at 5am. They started to pray over her like in a trance with dramatic movements that I cannot even imagine a hardcore televangelist do. This was a ploy to get my mother in law to start paying tithe to their parish. A couple of weeks later we found out they weren't actually people of the cloth.
So this wasn't technically in public, just a very rude hospital visit.
In the mid 1800s, Hong Xiuquan proclaimed himself to be the brother of Jesus Christ, and led the Taiping Rebellion against the Qing Dynasty, with almost 30,000 believers and many more supporters.
Even today, Christians and other religions are seen as a threat to China's rulers.
this is a big problem with reunification of korea, many religions with strong support in south korea.
