Just to settle one argument, given the choice to have children born in China or at home, which you rather?. I have free health care and I think it's way better than China. I can ignore the Chinese woman needs to stay in bed and eat Chinese food because it's probably good to have her family around. That would be the only plus side to me.

if you are from country having the free health care service provided so what is the point of making it out in china. better have it in your home town. what is china going to pay you for having a Chinese baby. if your wife agrees and you agree as well move on to your own country . i agree its not easy many things need to be consider but as i am saying, health service are very expensive in china so better watch out......
Having the child in China (and raising them there for the first few years) has its advantages. For me, it was very cheap to hire a live in maid to help with the cooking and cleaning and allow us to focus on the kids. And for a couple of years we even had a live in teacher for the boys and that was fantastic. The woman was a Chinese Mary Poppins. Hiring help like that in the US would be way more expensive than it is worth.
As far as the health care costs, it really wasn't that much. Our kids are thankfully very healthy and have only needed minimal health care.
The one thing that is more expensive here has been baby formula and diapers. I am sure they would be far less expensive back in the US.
TedDBayer:
whats a hospital stay worth ? I take it women home birth?
Xpat.John:
Actually, the hospital stay was pretty nice. My wife stayed for 10 days total. She had a private room and 24/7 nurse. The babies were in the room with her all the time except when she was sleeping, then they were moved to the nurses station about 50 feet away.
In my wife's room was an extra bed so that myself, her mother or the maid could be with her 24/7 as well.
During the stay the nurses showed her how to care for the babies and helped her get comfortable with what needed to be done.
The entire stay was about 30k RMB but was completely worth it in my opinion.
TedDBayer:
Thanks guys, thats like $5000 for something thats free at home. Money talks to Chinese, too bad I'm thinking of leaving her.
Xpat.John:
Chinese women rarely want to do natural birth. They will get a C section 95% of the time so they can preserve their figure. That is the same reason a lot don't want to breast feed. They think it will make them ugly.
Ted: I think that is a very personal decision, and many will have different solutions to it.
I can only talk for USA laws and regulations, but since I did face that situation 10 years ago, I will tell you what was the pivoting factor in making mine.
If my child had been born in China, she can still be a USA citizen by birth when I register her birth at the US Embassy. But according to US law, even if a citizen by birth, she could not run for President of the USA. You must be born in one of the 50 States to be able to do so. And since I can not predict the future, I felt bad that her 4 older brothers could, and she could not, so she was born in USA soil. Maybe it is a foolish reason for many, but it was not for me,
Xpat.John:
I never thought of the fact my kids wouldn't be able to be president. I am not sure if that would have tipped the scales or not, but it would have been something to consider.
abroad, in any civilized country people wont push a preg woman out of the way to catch a train or bus. someone does that to my girl i'm getting executed.
Had my child here, went to a specialized hospital that only deals with births and nothing else, had no problems
We had our kids in my home country
one because that is were we had chosen to base ourselves
and 2 the health care was free and the climate is better
also the government pays you to have kids in Australia
