I often hear Chinese people say that the head of a fish is the best part. I'm not so sure, and even have a pet theory about this potential culinary misnomer. The theory goes thus: a mother with little money is feeding her kids a fish supper, the meat is all gone and a voice pipes up saying "Mom, i'm still hungry" and so the financially challenged mother offers the head which is still left uneaten. The child looks up, suprised and says "#$%* offfff, i'm not eating that!" but the mother only smiles kindly and says, "But sweetheart, that's the best bit, dear. Now EAT IT!" and so a nation's collective mind fools itself into believing that some dodgy scrap, barren of meat save for its two beady staring eyes, is actually the best bit of the fish.
Waddaya reckon? Makes perfect sense, or perfect nonsense?
head being the best part of a fish? never heard of it. Nor did I ever heard the story. My mom loves fish heads, but that's just her personal preference.
I can see in my hotel restaurants how people will fight about getting the head of the fish, as well they love eating the eyes and sucking the jaws. I must believe this comes from a story like the one you tell Gaohao.
If you hear a lie often enough you will eventually believe it...good story...sounds about right with all the folklore in China.
The first thing my gf will snatch off a freshly cooked fish are the eyeballs...then the head.
Gaohao:
Haha, my girlfriend prefers to grabs the balls and give me the head:)
Sorry, i'm a deadbeat, Lebowski:)Yes, the head is the best part. You should always leave the bad parts like the body for clueless diners like me who simply don't know any better. You're also welcome to the tail with my compliments. Oh, and the chicken head? that's yours, too.
