Q: Hernia update (chinese hospital)

its Saturday 1pm Just got back from the hospital.

went with my wife and son.I saw the doctor 1st,then went up to the 3rd floor for an ultrasound, went back down to the doctor he said there is nothing wrong with me.

he said no core training no heavy weights just light weights until i get better.according to the doctor I pulled a muscle.

some how in the back of my mind I still think there is something wrong.

I have lost 4 kg thats a good thing.

I just want to say that I am a good father and I have a good wife, yes I work out at the gym I go every 2nd day.I dont go to bars and drink,I dont drink I dont smoke and I have never cheated.

I watch tv shows at work during the 3 hour lunch break.yes I enjoy playing my PS4 which my wife gave me for my birthday.

money is tight in our family as my wife does not work she looks after our son.doing a degree is something that I have thought about but just can not afford to do right now.but I have found some part time work that will give us some extra money.

I used to be addicted to a substance  (E) until 2009 I decided to stop and that was very hard to do being here in China.I pulled myself through it.I go to the gym as it is a positive thing for me.

I have made a lot of mistakes in my life,I have made mistakes here in China, having my son has Changed me a lot, being I love being a father.

also maybe my writing skills are not the best, but I am a very good kindergarten teacher.I have always been on time for work,I always teach my classes well.

about the hernia well I really did think that I had one,but the doctor doesnt think that i do.I can put up with a lot of pain, and this was the 1st time I have been to a hospital for a very long time.

Im pretty healthy.I am not an attention seeking whore either.I try to be honest when i post on ECC or other forums.

Im a pretty good person in general.

any way thats what i have to say look sorry if I made you pissed off Sinobear that was not my intention.I was just replying to another post that I got help from.

Sinobear hope you have a good 7 day holiday.

hope everyone has a safe 7 day holiday.

I know this is a Q a a A section and not a blog but I actually enjoy hearing people's stories and snippets from their lives. Congrats on getting over the E RobRicks, you sound like a good guy. If people don't care, they can read a different thread, simple as that. Rob, the reason I posted the comment that you shouldn't have to apologize for your writing skills on the scam thread was that you shouldn't let haters make you feel nervous about sharing your story. This is not a literary forum for peters sake. Just a place to shoot the shit about living in China. If the whole forum was visa questions no one would post here. Good luck to you.

Hey Rob, good luck with the situation. Hopefully you don't have a hernia after all. Sinobear, wtf man. I see you changed your original post but being that cruel to someone online totally unprovoked is not cool at all. Rob seems like a nice guy to me and certainly doesn't deserve that kind of abuse. Considering all of the trolling on this site, why go after a guy who is clearly real and honest? If you don't like the topic just ignore it, downvote it and move on. What motivates you to be so cruel to a stranger online?

Rob - I posted on your first post on this topic - I hope it helps.

Firstly, perhaps you're using the word 'hernia' in a different way than is used by the medical/sports people.

Secondly - general rule of thumb is the rule of 3's. The way I was taught is that 70% of issues will heal within 3 days. Of the remaining 30%, 70% of those will heal up within 3 weeks. Of the remaining 30%, 70% of those can take up to 3 months to heal. And of the remaining 30% of those - you'll probably be feeling for the rest of your life!

Also - I'm sure you know first aid, so I'll just remind you of the most important of the RICER regime - REST!!!

As I said in my other post - you didn't say WHERE this problem is!!! This makes a HUGE difference to any diagnosis - especially online! And, thus, who is the best professional to see about such things. In general, when talking sports related injuries, basic hospital doctors are NOT the best professionals to seek for advice! Physiotherapists are MUCH better trained to deal with this sort of thing!!!!eleventy!!one

"he said there is nothing wrong with me."

Ummmm - you're still in China - I think by definition, that means there's something wrong with you Tongue

As for Sino - he obviously doesn't understand what 'community' means to many people. So be it. I've been there.. but this forum is also a place for the community members to ask questions and get answers about their experiences here in China - this issue actually fits the purpose.

Shot in the dark mate...

I had terrible sciatica, so bad I couldn't walk, sit, stand or lie down.

Went to the hospital....worse than useless.

The local taxi guy had a bad back from all the driving, so recommended the local TCM guy...he got it sorted right away..L3 - L4 vertebra...CLICK!

Sorted!

Don't discount it!

Shining_brow:

The Sciatic nerve runs from L4 to S3, and through the Gluteal muscles.

Sciatica, thus, usually (often?) occurs when the gluteals tense up - which is basically cramping on a smaller scale, which then turns into a 'knot' later down the track. The nerve then gets constantly squeezed by the pressure, which results in the excrutiating pain.

The best treatment then, is on the gluteal muscles - relaxing them, and getting rid of the knots. The acupuncture also helps to do this. This may also help to relax the muscles enough to move the lower Lumbar back into position (instead of being pulled out of place by the tensed muscles).

"Basset hounds got long ears." - Berkley breathed.

Shining_brow:

As i mentioned above - you don't seem to have grasped the concept of 'community'.

ECC has a small group of people who interact regularly - and thus, would be called a 'community'. And, when someone has an issue, they will consult with their family, and then their friends, and then their community.

If you want to talk about 'sociological experiments', you also need to accept that, sociologically, internet forums - and perhaps especially those of an expat-centred motif - can be a vitally important community for its members.

You appear to disagree with this concept.

Yes, this is a Q&A forum, for China related things (hopefully - at the very least, mostly). I do actually see a context for Rob's post being China related... like many medical issues, coming to this forum MAY provide answers that going to Chinese medicos may not give. In this particular example, as I indicated, physios are a much better option, if they can be found, than a doctor. Their training is quite different.

Should it have been blogged, rather than posted here? Perhaps. But, here is where it happened, and wasn't much more out of the ordinary than many other questions.

As for Mike's language - a good example of why this place needs better modding. But, nothing much seems to change here :(

Perhaps you should try a "sociological experiment" on perceptions of compassion.

dongbeiren:

Dear Sinobear, I can tell that you have put a lot of thought into this post. It is interesting how you begin by defining yourself by your membership in Dave's ESL Cafe and Echinacities. It is clear that your online identity is very important to you and that you feel threatened by the overwhelmingly negative reactions towards your recent unsolicited attack on RobRocks. If your goal is to continue to be a positive contributinig member to this forum (and I do believe that you generally are) this is my advice to you: admit that you made a mistake and move on. Everyone has bad days and vents online - sometimes that venting makes people look bad. I've seen it from numerous forum members that I generally respect. I've started threads and feuds with people (Mike and Laowaigentleman), apologized and have since moved on and get along with both just fine. I think most people on this forum would be more than happy to forgive you if you simply come out and admit that your post towards RobRocks was cruel and unnecessary and that you could have made your point about the purpose of the Q & A section without the vicious personal attacks on Rob's intelligence and status as a forum member. Just mea culpa and move on. You seem to be trying to play the victim card here: "hurtful comments regarding my treatment of RobRocks" when you were the aggressor plain and simple. There's no reason to lash out at me and others for coming to Rob's defense when you started everything: you're digging yourself deeper and deepr into a hole and it is really doing nothing to repair your online image that you seem to care so deeply about. Now, since you did take this opportunity to attack me personally I'm going to address that. I'm not really sure how the gym thread you refer to makes me come across as a narcissist: http://answers.echinacities.com/question/do-you-exercise-all-china-yes-youyou-lazy-sob?type=latest. My post was a pretty generic "I go to the gym and it's a positive part of my life". I was in no way claiming to have a great body or be some kind of muscle bound protein shake drinking stud. I just have no idea why you cited that thread. If you wanted to attack me as a hypocrite, why not go back through my post history and find my lengthy diatribes against mike and laowaigentleman? That would at least logically support your position (hey that dongbeiren guy called me out for attacking Rob but he attacked MIke and Laowaigentleman!) even though I've since made amends with both. It's also quite humorous that you commented on my other post with the following brilliant line: "Take your meds, Dongbeiren, and flex for your invisible girlfriend." Now, if people go back to the gym thread that you decided to bring up, it's pretty clear which one of us comes across as needing to take his meds and that someone certainly isn't me. As for my wife (I don't have a girlfriend) I can assure that she is real, young, and attractive. And I'm pretty sure only one of those three adjectives applies to you Sinobear. Honestly Sino, I've never had a problem with you in the past. I have only been a member of this forum for about a year and ECC is clearly a lot more important to you than it is for me. In a few months, I will be leaving China with my wife to start a new life in the United States and I doubt that I will post here very often although I hope to post periodic updates and comments because I do feel that I have become part of this community in the past year and some people on the forum might be interested in what I'm up to, just like some people might be interested in RobRocks' adventures in China (just as I'm interested in hearing about Coin and Dr. Monkey moving back to Europe). You will still be in China and a large part of your existence will be your status as an ECC and Dave's poster. I really don't care if you or any other stranger online thinks I'm a narcissist (I still have no idea how the gym thread portrays me that way but it sure does portray you as a nutter) but you obviously do care that everyone on this forum thinks you're a dick right now. So why not just man up, admit you were too harsh with your comments about Rob and move on?

expatlife26:

I get where you went with that, but I think you're kinda conflating two different things.

You bring up the difference between how people reacted to your criticizing robrocks and mike's criticizing daphne. I think that's a very different situation because in Daphne's case, her original question post was the one that was the uncalled for, aggressive call out. This kind of like "You're all so ignorant to make generalizations about China! I know better than all of you people who have lived here for years." So yeah people responded to it.

But Mike in that other thread wasn't your counterpart, mike was Dongbeiren in that thread. The one calling the person making an aggressive statement an asshole. People didn't call him out for saying Daphne was a dumb hipster with rose colored glasses, because she had posted something insulting.

Your dig at robrocks for having a hernia really seemed like it was out of left field.  Just seemed really random thats why I wondered even if it was some kinda satire.

People suck on the internet, definitely can be a pile it on mentality if somebody sins against the group consensus. I caught myself doing that up there. Reminded that sinobear posts interesting stuff and was either joking or having a bad day.

I dunno, I think the Q&A format of this site is ignored by most of us. This should just be a message board kinda forum. I get why they wanted to make a P2P Q&A section, but in practice we all just use it as a forum. Posting a blog is kind of a pain. Can take weeks to even get it approved. Not that big a deal if somebody wants to post it here.

Really? This was a social experiment? Here's me thinking you were just drunk and having a bad day.

I was one of the one's who replied to you so I suppose that makes me a 'chav' and a hypocrite. I don't think so but whatever.

The way I see it, people were just telling you cut the bullshit, you were coming across as the online equivalent of the nasty drunk at a party abusing someone. Call it white knighting if you want.

Stiggs is spot on, Sino was probably drunk and/or having a bad day. Claiming that post was a sociological experiment sounds like a pretty far fetched attempt at justifying himself.

Btw Sino, I re read the gym thread which you use as your attack against me and I think you're confusing me with another forum member as I couldn't find anything by me in that thread other than my pretty vanilla answer about the gym being a positive part of my life.

Just to add ...  Sino, if you were drunk and having a BCD or something I understand that. I've done the same thing myself.

If it was an experiment as you say then I don't really think it was in good taste.

But in either case, it's no big deal.

Put simply, your long winded comment is just a bunch of rubbish to justify your poor, rude behaviour.  Sociological experiment?  Get real.  Why do we need to know all the boring details of your past to understand your boorish behaviour?  It's not that complicated.  You behaved badly,  the forum called you out on it.  Simple as that.  Dongbeiren said it best:  Just apologize and get on with it.  This forum has been quite accommodating when someone is humble enough to admit their mistakes.

Sino, not everybody hates you. Why not take this as a chance to say mea culpa and I'm sure everyone will forgive and forget.

royceH:

Do you reckon I'm a narcissist too?  I seem to recall someone once inferring I was something of that ilk.  It might have been someone who's contributed to this very thread.

That sinobear says I need to take my meds and flex for my invisible girlfriend. I think I'm just gonna go to the gym now ( which means I'm a narcissist?) and come home to my real wife and take my meds in the qingdao liquid variety. Still hoping we can medicate together some day wink

Give up the weights, Rob.  Cardio work is what you need.  You might be too big for running (impact issues for your knees etc) so stick with cycling.  If you give it swish-o you'll be working all the muscles in your body and suffer no impact injuries.

Btw...do you wear a helmet when you ride?
