I was in Shanghai for two weeks a month ago, and was mainly in the central/downtown areas. * Are the outlying areas pretty crowded as well?

Nope, no people and dinosaurs roam around there. Thats why the planes circle around in Shanghai so they will not run into the brontosaurus'!

Another true fact - thats why Chinese people don't like to travel.
