It can be done. I got one for a chinese friend of mine last year who is abroad. Imagine a gweilo having to do this for a local - it was a nightmare that took over a month or back and forth to various offices. Your situation is much easier.

Get ready to jump through hoops and I hope you have a VERY GOOD TRUSTWORTHY FRIEND who lives in the city you were last in.

1. write a letter of authority for your friend to act on your behalf - in chinese and sign it. Friend must countersign it too.

If this letter is in english your very good friend will need to have it translated and     notorised in china.

2. send your passport to friend. A copy doesn't cut it.

3. provide your last police registration form

4. Very good friend goes to police station where you registered and requests a criminal check

5. usually within 72 hours collect police check.

6. Very good friend takes it to the notory office where it will be translated and notorised.

NOTE: there is no facility available to get a province or national police check. It is only for the police station you registered at and whatever areas to which they are networked. ie: none. Police check is free. Notorising it cost me 350 rmb

You're screwed. You can only get it in person at a police station, PSB. Before you leave a city get 2 or 3 copies just incase.

This answer is correct. I've done this before so I know you have to be here.
