Q: High rise apartments v traditional houses?

I know what I would prefer. A low rise house by a  river where I could fish at night after work.

I hanker after having my feet on the ground rather than sky being high.

But my wife insists high rise is better.

What do you reckon.... high rise or low rise?

In China, living in a house generally means living in a village, the village houses I've seen aren't anywhere near as nice as a modern apartment and there's a reason everyone wants to move out of the village and into the city. They don't want to be peasants.

I suspect that's what your wives are saying Alan and Phil, they want to have face and not be seen as peasants.

Also, living in the city you have shopping, restaurants, bus and subway lines, schools, convenient hair salons and medicine stores and places downstairs to buy noodles or fruit or whatever, the footpaths are paved, there is a sewerage system, internet and things are modern. You can see why the wives would want that.

Apartments do suck though. You have noisy neighbours, useless building management, shoddy wiring and plumbing that causes pipes to burst and flood the downstairs apartments, people spitting and dumping their rubbish in the stairwells (and sometimes worse) and I definitely wouldn't want to be in one of those buildings in a decent sized earthquake.

I'd much rather live in a house near a body of water with no neighbours close by, but not in China.

The place would probably be like a palace but at the end of the day it would still be out in the boonies away from the city convenience and excitement, and when people ask her where she lives she'd have to answer _____ village and be judged for it.

I found a little place up NTH that is very similar to what you discribed.
2 story villa not far from a cleanish river .
The price was less than 70k aus .
There is a big Agricultural university up the road that does Animal husbandry and crop growing .
But I have a similar problem to as the minister for milk powder and vitamins likes apartment block living

Since we're in China, the higher you live, the fewer cockroaches and insects...

I get that with snakes and rats, but we have loads of mozzies and roaches on the 11th floor.

Its about control and security, high rise no back door to escape, housing complexes one entry and exit, all about control. You live in a very large cage with lots of cameras but you don't really think you live in a cage, BUT, you do. I don't know who is watching all of those cameras of the 2 legged zoo, but it's probably better than Chinese TV.

A: "... through ..."?  Only "through" comes to mind is "Shenzhen agent can connect you with an employer, who's authorized to hire waigouren ... and can sponsor Z visa." It's not like every 10th person you meet in Shenzhen's hood can sponsor work visa ...  The only way to change from student to labourer visa is just a regular way by: 1. Finding an employer, who'll apply for an Invitation letter; 2. Exit China and apply for Z visa in your home country's Chinese embassy; 3. Enter China in 30-days after Z visa was stamped into your travelling instrument ...As I am aware, you won't be able to switch to Working permit by remaining in China....,so make ready for a return to your home .... -- icnif77
