Q: Hired without an interview?
I just received an offer for a position. I was told "no interview is needed," when I asked about scheduling an interview.
Has anything like this happened to other people here?

I would never take a job that doesn't require an interview. It shows the employer doesn't care about anything except your nationality and appearance and you can expect to be treated with a level of respect reflecting that.
School might doesn't have fluent English speaker to conduct interview, so they're happy when they saw files of your USA passport and Recommendation letters.
That's one of the reasons, why all Chinese job adverts require 'Native English teacher'.
I would do the same, if I need to hire Chinese teacher, and my Chinese would be (is) very low.
ESL? What salary? Which city?
You need to know that more foreigners are leaving China than coming in, it has become relatively more complicated for schools to find dancing monkeys especially since many people back home are now aware that China is not so cheap anymore and that something like 10000RMB per month is a joke if you live in a first tier city.
I run a recruiting agency, more schools are willing to accept Africans or Filipinos, not that they are becoming less racist, but they have no choice, this or no foreign teacher and the last option means they run out of business.

@SwedKiwi: there's a big difference between what they're offering and what you can negotiate. All HR low-balls to save/skim money. It's what people are willing to accept that makes these offers continue - 10K/mo is not a lot by western standards but is a lot to Filipinos and some Africans.

SwedKiwi it's up to you to negotiate higher salaries and better benefits, don't accept upfront what is offered. China being a country where you can negotiate everything from the price of that lettuce to that of the new apartment you are buying, it is not surprising that they expect you to negotiate your employment contract as well.
Typically the less you earn the more someone at the school is putting into their pocket, most schools have a monthly budget of 20-25000RMB per foreign teacher. It can be the principal and some HR is probably getting a cut.
Now I won't lie, we do take a cut as well, all agents do, but in our case it's certainly not what we take that justifies these low salaries, we do not take 50%, someone else does and I have no idea who.

it is trolling season again for fake employers looking to steal your identity.
Anyone who offers an unsolicited job like this is a fake.
I got a similar offer last week from a guy called ;Harry' and a company called chinaenergy@hotmail.com
I'm just going to expose these trolls online.

if they are not going to be open and above board at the hiring stage, they are not going to deal with their employees fairly.
SO people should be warned
yeah, I've had 'interviews' that were just quick Skype chats resulting in a contract offer. Alleged international schools in Shanghai and Beijing. Their companies were real and the salaries decent, but the lack of screening was just ridiculous.
