Q: History books not allowed in China?

Are history books about China not allowed into China if the books are from abroad?

I know there is a restriction on certain things/issues in China, but I thought that surely books about China's history would still be allowed inside.

A Chinese citizen told me I cannot bring the books back into China because they are unbiased, and this may contradict the history books in China.

Is this guy out to lunch, or will I be at risk for ordering the books?

From what I have been told, there are certain types of books that won't be allowed in China.  I know of song books, bibles, history books (especially ones that mention touchy subjects) and books on certain prohibited religious practices that have been denied entry into the country.

I think it would depend on what era in history the book is about. If it is about recent history, say the last 100 years, then as long as it follows the CPC's view of that period it will probably be allowed. If it is about ancient history, the "5000 years ago" history, then there won't be a problem. I have seen many of the books I have read back home on ancient Chinese history for sale at the foreign language bookstore in Shanghai.

No problem on my part. I brought my Bible and one of my World History books with me. Now, if i had tried to bring a big stack, maybe that would have been different.
