Q: Hitting guy on bike exiting taxi - was I lucky to get away with it?

This morning as my cab stopped over in a scooter lane to drop me off I didn't see one of them zooming by. I opened my door and hit him. The kinda ran into the curb, didn't fall or anything but was holding his left arm in apparent pain. I went up to him and he seemed alright after a while, though yelling profusely.

Police came over, a crowd gathered and miraculously, the taxi driver was the one who got a ticket for stopping in a scooter lane, which apparently they're not supposed to.

Has anyone been in this situation before? I know it sounds scummy, but my instinct the entire time was just to pay the driver and walk away. As soon as the police showed up, I was almost dead certain I'd have to cough up a huge wad of cash...

Well you know what they say be careful when you open  your door. Although it wasn't just your fault so the blame wouldn't be centered around you. The taxi driver stopped in the wrong lane and also the scooter guy may have been speeding. ...You were lucky nobody got seriously injured but the police knew what to do which was give the tickets and have you apologize..

Jesus man, you got lucky.

Tip to all foreigners: if you see someone knocked over, do not go and touch them, they will call the police and say you hit them.  Anyone who replies and says this is BS,  youre too niave. This is an infamous part of Chinese culture now.   Why do you think the guy was holding his arm?  Unless he went to the hospital (he didnt) then he was faking it for a payoff.  This is the worst thing about China.

My friend was on his bike and stopped at a red light. A pedestrian got his by someone on a bike and the guy rode off.  My friend was just on his bike at the red light, the police came and the woman fingered my friend!! he got fined 2000 kuai!! he was just sat there on his bike but because he couldnt speak Chinese he just paid it.

Just be careful in future be careful man.
