Q: Hitting your child in public - no problem?

Just wondering if it's fine to hit your child here, and if so, where? A slap on the ass doesn't count - I mean slapping the face.

To be honest though, most of what I've seen so far has been children hitting their parents...

I saw a clip on Utube of a Chinese man hitting and kicking a 5 yr old white kid and yelling go home white boy (in chinese) another man walked up and hit the kid,, looked like the kids hand got broken,, kid was just lying on the ground screaming,,, crowds of Chinese people were just walking by,, so I think you could beat your kid in public or somebody elses.

some parents, especially fathers, think it necessary to use violence to teach the children. and other people won't interfere how you treat your faimlies, even they want to help.

I second what toad said, in truth 90% of the kids here need a good hard swift kick in the ass... Having said that... 90% of them are boys that need it.

I once did a four hour train ride and weekend with my GF's nephew and his mom. I couldn't believe the shit this kid was getting away with. If I had done any of that I would have been killed and my parents would be out of prison by now.

I've never seen parents hitting their kids in public. I don't think it has anything to do with 'hitting' being appropriate or not - I just think any public display of anger is a face-loss for people.

Also, they spoil their kids. If anything, the kids hit their parents more than the parents hit their kids!

sounds about right for a chinese man beating a kid instead of going after a man. no one intervenes here no matter what, someone attacking the bus driver while he's driving on the highway the bus full of cowards just stood and stared with all of our lives on the line only i had sense to break it up.
what i find amazing is that walking on the street people yell rude comments to me but when their worthless lives are on the line they remain quiet

With the rise of this new middle class, many ideas about how to show everyone else that you have money has come about (ordering too much food so it goes to waste, letting yourself get fat). One of these is not disciplining your kid. From flat out asking some of the parents why? It's the idea that the wealthy can afford to pay off whoever they need for their children's bad behavior, and that's what the new middle class wants to try and appear as.

I think if parent's beat their kids in public more often they wouldn't have such a big problem with the Little Emperor/Empress Syndrome.

I was on a four hour train ride and this kid of about 7 or 8 was being really rude, running around, screaming and pushing peoples newspapers and magazines down. Finally, his mom tried to calm him down and he hit her! Much to my surprise, the mom took off her scarf and tied the kids hands and sat him in his seat! While he did continued to scream, LOUDLY, we were able to read our newspapers, etc without having them ripped from our hands. She untied him just before their stop. 5 years ago I would have been outraged....

I think the parents here don't know how to discipline their children. The generation that are adults now grew up as part of the one child policy. Their parents coddled them, that's what they learned, and now they are doing the same. I heard it's because the parents will depend on their one child when they are old, so they do not want the child to hate them. Along with the lack of discipline, or occasionally, too much discipline, children don't learn how to take care of themselves, and have no freedoms until they are already adults. The cycle just keeps repeating. If children hit the parents, it's because the parents let them do it, and it happens in America, too.

Parents do not hit their children in public - it's a loss of face and humiliating to do it in public.

That's the only reason they don't do it. Otherwise it would be fine.
